Celebrating Hour of Code - 2015
Booker T. Washington
All 300 of our students did the Hour of Code. We used a few of the algorithm problems from the unplugged lessons this year and we coded a student across the classroom using arrows on the board to introduce the idea that the character will not move and turn at the same time.
The kids were so excited that Minecraft was one of the choices this year! Our students say that coding helps make our brains stronger so we can solve problems using algorithms and show me how strong their brains are when they beat a level by tapping their brains and then showing me their muscles.
The Hour of Code is always one of their favorite activities of the year because the students have so much fun while learning. It is one of my favorite activities because students that are not always successful academically have the opportunity to shine.

My classes programmed code for games using Scratch. AP Senior Lit students created quiz games to review literary elements of the Independent Reading novels they had just completed. Sophomore English students created quiz games for grammar content they had just learned in class (correct pronoun case usage). See an example by sophomore Delia Charles.
