Spain Park High School 02/28/20
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
This week was very busy, with many fun-filled, educational events that are worth mentioning in our newsletter. We ended a very uplifting Black History Month that highlighted our theme, Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future. This student-led month of celebration was a great success. It’s always good to talk with your student about what they experienced and learned. We also participated in Be Kind Week and reminded each other not only to be kind this week but every week throughout the year.
On Thursday, our Girls’ Basketball Team beat McGill Toolen in the semi-final round of the state playoffs. The Lady Jags will play the Hoover Lady Bucs on Saturday at the Legacy Arena for the state championship. Tip-off is at 4 pm. Come out and support the Jags and cheer them on to another state championship!
I attended the SPHS Winter Production of Peer Gynt on opening night. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the opportunity, once again, to see our incredibly talented students perform so magnificently. The play will be performed four more times this weekend, tonight, Saturday matinee, evening, and Sunday matinee. See the link below for the play’s description and times.
Please mark your calendars for the E-Learning Day on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. This is a very important day for our Junior Class, who will be taking the ACT + Writing, here, at Spain Park. Our freshmen, sophomores, and seniors will have e-learning assignments posted in the grade-level Google Classroom for each core course. See the flyer below for details.
Finally, I would like to thank The Honorable Arnold Mooney, Alabama State Representative, for his support with our Flag Project. Mr. Mooney is a strong supporter of Spain Park High School and our community. See the information below for specifics.
As always, I am available to hear your feedback on how we can make SPHS a great place to be.
Respectfully,
Peter L. Giangrosso

From the Nurse's Office
Keeping Your Child Home Due to Illness or Injury
Minor illnesses or injuries do not require your child to be absent from school. Many illnesses do require your child to be absent from school for your child’s protection as well as the protection of the other students and staff members. Such conditions would include, but are not limited to:
*Fever of 100 degrees or higher: Your child should stay home if he/she has an oral temperature of 100 degrees or higher and should remain home until fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications (Advil, Tylenol, Motrin, etc.)
*Vomiting or diarrhea: Your child should stay home if he/she has vomited or had diarrhea (more than one loose stool) within 2 hours prior to the start of the school day. They must eat and tolerate a normal meal without vomiting or diarrhea before returning to school
*Pink eye (untreated)
Strep throat: If your child has been diagnosed as having strep throat, your child should stay home until 24 hours after antibiotic therapy has started.
*Injury or illness requiring intensive medical services that interfere with the academic process
*Adverse side effects from medication that need monitoring
*Head lice, or no reduction in the number of nits after treatment of head lice
There are also some contagious conditions that carry special requirements about returning to school, such as strep throat, pink eye, chickenpox, flu, etc. If your student has a condition or illness that you are unsure about with regards to school attendance, please contact the nurses at (205) 439-1430 or email blaney@hoover.k12.al.us to get information before sending your child back to school. If your child is diagnosed with the flu, please inform the nurses. We want to be a partner in promoting the very highest level of wellness for each student in our school environment.
Scoliosis Screening for Freshmen
The Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Public Health require that school districts in Alabama offer and provide scoliosis screening for male and female students in grades 5 through 9.
Screening is performed by observing the uncovered spine, viewing the student from the back, side, and with the student bending forward. If a spinal problem is suspected, the child will be rechecked at a second screening. Parents of students found to have signs of possible spinal abnormality will be asked to see their physicians for further evaluation.
Girls and boys will be screened separately to ensure privacy. They can wear gym clothes or other clothing that may be removed easily. If your child is currently under treatment for a spinal deformity, please let us know, and your child will be exempt from the screening process.
This year it is scheduled for 3/11/2020 as an opt-in instead of an opt-out program. See the form below that must be returned to the nurse for your student to be screened.
