Calcium Chloride

What is Calcium Chloride and How Does It Work
Calcium chloride is a salt that is very good at "breaking the ice". CaCl2 has three particles, one calcium and two chlorine particles, that lower the melting point of the ice.

"There's the sugar" or should I say salt
Before and After
The picture on the left is water at 0 degrees Celsius without CaCl2 and the picture on the right is water at 0 degrees Celsius with CaCl2
CO$T
$5.60 for 500g of lab grade calcium chloride.
Environmental Effects
In Water (comparison to road/table salt)
CaCl2: Moderate - Excessive chloride loading; heavy metal contamination
NaCl: Moderate - Excessive chloride loading, metal contaminants; ferrocyanide additives
In Soil (comparison to road/table salt)
Cacl2: Low/Moderate - Improves soil structure; increases permeability; potential for metals mobilization
NaCl: Low/Moderate - Improves soil structure; increases permeability; potential for metals mobilization
