Girls Only "Appy Hour"

Girls Only "Appy Hour"

Eleven students attended the first "Appy Hour" in the NHS library. They learned about career options from Ms. Stacey Knernschield while signing up for Missouri Connections.
The girls played with 3D images using Mrs. Dougherty's iPad using the app ColAR Mix - 3D Coloring App. Pinterest and more apps were shared with the girls. Several liked the idea of Circle of 6, which is a personal safety app for both iPhone and Android smartphones. The first "Appy Hour" was a success with plans being made to have a regular "Appy Hour" next school year.

NHS Students Welcome Mike Mullin, Author of Ashfall Series

On Friday, March 28th, Mike Mullin spoke with students about writing novels and the science of super volcanoes. Fifty students were invited to breakfast in the library and Mr. Mullin's presentation. Invitees included the school's top readers counted by number of library books checked out, creative writing club members, and library assistants. Everyone enjoyed his visit, especially his Taekwondo demonstration. Can you answer the question of the day: How long would it take ash and debris from the explosion of the Yellowstone super volcano to reach Cedar Hill?

Check out the Ashfall books from the NHS Library. Visit Mike Mullin's website http://mikemullinauthor.com to read more about his books. Video book trailer for his book, Ashfall, is included below.

Seniors Plan "Road Trips" for Researching Advanced Composition Papers

Seniors enrolled in Advanced Composition are working on their last major research paper assigned by Mrs. Clem, Mrs. McCabe, or Mr. Haynes. The assignment requires researching literary criticisms published in academic journals. Even though the NHS library provides resources in the Ebscohost academic databases, most students will need to research their authors in the St. Louis County literature databases. This makes this writing assignment more like what they will be doing next year in college - going to a "new" library on campus.

Students are given a Literary Criticism pathfinder on the NHS Library Student projects section with specific information on which databases to use, which libraries to access, and how to cite their sources. To give everyone a little incentive for this "road trip", the NHS librarians are having a drawing for five students who send back a "selfie" taken at the St. Louis County library by email.
