Gratitude: the gift that keeps giving all year long
Whatβs one thing we can do anywhere, any time and at any age that can improve our well being and even improve our health?
PRACTICE GRATITUDE.
Research shows that gratitude can strengthen our brain, reduce stress and depression. And the benefits donβt stop there. Practicing thanks can lower blood pressure, improve sleep and even strengthen our immune systems.
Among youth, gratitude has been shown to be a powerful protective factor against high risk behaviors such as substance use.
Giving and receiving gratitude causes our brains to release dopa-mine and serotonin, two chemicals tied to our emotions, also known as our βfeel goodβ chemicals.
The key to using this superpower is consistency, doing it every day for three weeks, for example. Here are some ways to start:
β’ Gratitude Alphabet: Go through the alphabet and try to think of one thing for each letter for which your grateful. (If you write the letters out, you donβt have to go in order, and you donβt have to start at βA.β
β’ Gratitude Box: Whenever you think of something youβre grateful for, write it on a piece of paper and put it in a box. Reading through the pieces of paper can lift your mood on a bad day. Decorating the box brings in your creativity!
β’ Gratitude Letters: Send letters (the kind with stamps) to the people who pop up on your gratitude lists. Texts are great, but itβs nice to get mail.
Contact the Counseling Team at your studentβs school or Colleen Chan with any suggestions, comments, or questions.

Community Recognition Nominations
The Sedro-Woolley School District is seeking nominations for the Annual District Recognition program to honor those who have so graciously dedicated themselves to the Sedro-Woolley School District and the Sedro-Woolley Community. Nominees can be individuals outside or within the school district that have rendered outstanding service to the community or demonstrated loyal support and outstanding accomplishments in areas such as community service, academics, performing arts, or athletics. These exemplary efforts are recognized as going beyond the typical measures of accomplishment, and will be publicly honored at the District''s annual ceremony.
Selection Process: Each year nominations are accepted from the community and staff of those who have made an impact in the lives of students and the community. A committee of past Sedro-Woolley School District Community Recognition Program members will review the ongoing nominations, and select next yearβs inductees. The committee will review for 2023 on Dec. 15.

FREE TUTORS FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS!
The district will continue to offer FREE tutoring services for students in grades 7-12.
Paper is a secure, online tutoring service that provides students with unlimited, 24/7 academic support. Whether theyβre stuck on homework, studying for a test, or need someone to read and make suggestions to their essays, there will always be experts available online to assist students in more than 200 subjects and in FOUR languages.
Paper tutors have been specially trained to conduct expert, academic support in a secure, chat-based platform. With a commitment to helping students learn, theyβll never give students answers, but rather interact with them in an encouraging tone to lead them forward.
This is a free service that the district is providing (paid for with ESSER funds), so students are encouraged to use it as much as they need, whenever they need. Our teachers also have accounts and will be able to review all student activity to see what theyβre working on and provide more targeted instruction as needed.
If youβd like to learn more about Paper you can sign up for a Paper hosted Parent Info Session, available in both English and Spanish. Or if youβd like to speak to a member of the Paper team directly, you can reach them at parents@paper.co.

Updated COVID-19 guidance for K-12 schools & child care
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) released updated COVID-19 guidance for K-12 schools and child care on Oct. 25, 2022.
- Students, children, and staff who test positive for COVID-19 are required to stay at home and isolate for 5 days.
- Students, children, and staff returning from 5 days of isolation should wear a well-fitted mask from days 6 to 10. Those returning are encouraged to test before doing so.
- Schools and child care providers are no longer required to directly notify high risk individuals of exposure but must continue to have a process in place to inform students, staff, and families of cases and outbreaks.
- Schools and child care providers continue to be required to report outbreaks (5 or more cases within a specified core group) to local health jurisdictions (LHJ) and to have a system in place to respond.
Sedro-Woolley School District Health Services team will continue to offer access to timely diagnostic testing for SWSD students with symptoms of COVID-19. The testing will be free of charge and will only be offered to ONLY students and staff showing symptoms.
Schedule an appointment and complete pre-test paperwork
Testing will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday on regular school days. All appointments will need to be scheduled, as drop-ins cannot be accommodated at this time.
While the guidance is specific to COVID-19 prevention, it can also help to reduce transmission of other common respiratory viruses such as influenza and RSV.
