HCS students enjoyed a fun Monday afternoon watching the 5th grade team launch model rockets to celebrate the culmination of their Starbase experience. Each student made a model rocket while attending Starbase, which is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program managed by the Vermont Air National Guard.
The program consists of students spending 4 days on the air base learning about cartography, robotics, flight simulation, chemistry and engineering, among other activities. Hinesburg has been lucky enough to attend the past two school years and we are excited to announce that the fifth grade team has already been accepted into the program for next year.
Best wishes for a great weekend!

Engage in a conversation and share your thoughts around nutrition and food service in our schools. View this flyer for more information and to RSVP. We hope you can join us.
Sticker Shock with Chief Koss
In an effort to inform adults about supplying minors with alcohol, five 6th grade members of the HCS CY LEAD (Connecting Youth Leadership Education the Anti-Drug) group conducted a Sticker Shock campaign at Lantman's in Hinesburg Thursday morning. Hinesburg Police Chief Frank Koss joined us in this endeavor. Sticker Shock is a county wide Campaign co-sponsored by START (Stop Teen Alcohol Risk Team) and the Chittenden Prevention Network.
Sticker Shock is meant to reduce underage drinking by limiting youth access to alcohol. The goal is to educate people 21 and over about the legal and financial consequences of providing alcohol to minors.
The team placed stickers and window clings on alcoholic beverages at Lantman's. The stickers and clings share a warning message about the penalties for providing alcohol to anyone under 21. When you go to Lantman's look for the red window clings on the beer cooler doors! As the sticker indicates, consequences include up to a $2,000 fine and/or up to 2 years in prison if convicted of furnishing alcohol to minors.
The students loved having the opportunity to make a difference in their community and were wonderful ambassadors of HCS. Thank you to Hinesburg Police, Lantman's, and Hinesburg Community School for a successful collaboration in helping keep our youth safe!
Congratulations!

Vermont Lake Monsters Celebration!
Celebrate the start of summer with Hinesburg family, friends and neighbors at Centennial Field on Wednesday, June 19th...first pitch 7:05 as the Vermont Lake Monsters take on the Hudson Valley Renegades (gates open at 6:00). Hinesburg Community School students will be selling game tickets (check your child’s backpack for an envelope with information) from May 10th-24th with proceeds from each ticket supporting Partners in Education (PiE) at HCS. Students that sell tickets are invited on the field pregame (must be at third base field entrance at 6:30). There will be special musical performances by members of HCS Band playing the “National Anthem” and our littlest HCS students (K-2) are invited to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the 7th inning stretch. It’s a night you will not want to miss! Come kick off summer with baseball, friends and of course CHAMP! Hope to see you there!
***NOTE: Tickets can be purchased and exchanged for a game of your choice while still supporting PiE at HCS. Questions? Please contact Jamie Cudney, PiE Parent Volunteer, at cudneykj@comcast.net

Tech Talk
Finstagrams are “private” Instagrams meant only for your closest friends. Many kids just refer to them as their private Instagram account. Here’s the definition from the Urban Dictionary:
“Finstagram, finsta for short, is a mixture of Fake & Instagram. People, usually girls, get a second Instagram account along with their real instagrams, rinstagrams, to post any pictures or videos they desire. The photos or videos posted are usually funny or embarrassing. Only your closest friends follow this account."
Teens create Finstagrams to have a place where they can be themselves with only their “closest” friends. I talked to a 13-year old named Maya who has two accounts, as do most of her friends. Her Finstagram account has 70 friends while her main “public” account has 800. Maya’s Finsta-friends are people she may regularly hang out with at school or on weekends. Her regular account is not truly public in that she has to accept each person. She says she only accepts people that she knows are at least friends of friends.
Maya only has about a dozen pictures on her regular account, posting maybe once a month. According to her, the types of pictures she puts up have to be “really good.” Every picture is not necessarily a selfie, but each photo is a “beautiful” or artsy shot, whether it is a sunset or a picture of herself that she feels confident people will like. On the other hand, she posts pictures to her Finstagram page every other day. These can be silly shots, or moments that she wants to share with her closest friends. These people on her regular account “get” her and she says she doesn’t feel judged by them so she’s willing to put up many more pictures. She also uses her Finstagram page to communicate to the wider group things like meeting up to hang out downtown. Maya says communicating via Instagram versus group text is easier when you don’t want to get notified over and over, and go back and forth with people.
Ahhh… the intricate life of a teen.
So, today for Tech Talk Tuesday lets talk about private vs public accounts:
- Do you have a Finstagram? If so, who do you let in as a friend?
- How often do you post on Instagram and to which account?
- How do you choose between accounts to post pictures?
- If you don’t use Instagram, why doesn't it appeal to you?
- How about all your other social media sites, i.e. Facebook, Snapchat, social video games, how do you choose who to be friends with and what you post?
- For you adults, who mostly use Facebook and LinkedIn, share with the kids how you choose who to accept as a friend, and what kinds of things you post.

HCS Climbing Club
Coming in Fall 2019 to HCS: HCS parent and mountain guide Nathan Fry will coach the HCS Climbing Club. The club is open to students in grades 6-8, with a max capacity of 12 students for the first year due to equipment limitations. The club will use the rock wall in HCS for regular practices and also take trips to local outdoor climbing areas. Rock climbing is a great way to get fit while also teaching self-confidence and teamwork! there will be an information session at HCS on Tuesday May 28 at 6pm. See HCS Athletics/Activities webpage for more information. Contact Nathan directly at Nathan.fry13@gmail.com if you have any initial questions. See you on the rock!
Hinesburg Survey
A group of Hinesburg community members and organizations has been thinking about community needs in Hinesburg in the years to come. We want to hear from you! We all hope to share information to strengthen existing programs and offerings, and in the process find new interests that might be addressed in the future. The survey is 15 questions and should only take about five to ten minutes to complete; participants can win a $25 gift card to Lantman's Market. Please complete the survey by May 30, 2019. You can find an online survey at the Capenter Carse Library website at www.carpentercarse.org or at the Hinesburg Community Resource Center website at www.hinesburgresource.org. Print copies are available at the Hinesburg Town Hall, Carpenter Carse Library, Hinesburg Community Resource Center, Friends of Families playgroups, and Parish Hall senior lunches.
