Exponent Laws

Hanna Hagerty

First Law- Multiplication

The first law of exponents is multiplication. When multiplying with exponents, you keep the base the same and add the exponents.

Second Law- Division

The second law: division. When you are dividing with exponents, you keep the base the same, and you subtract the exponents, in this case. For example: a^6 / a^3 = a^3.

You keep "a" the same, and subtract three from six.

Fourth Law- Power Raised to a Power

When you have a power raised to a power, like (a^3)^2, you would multiply the two exponents and keep your base the same. So, in this case, you would keep "a", but multiply three and two. Your answer will be a^6.
