ARGYLE HOUSE
Hamilton Boys' High School -Term 1, Edition 5, April 2019
Tributes to Christchurch, Argyle House Win the Haka House Competition, Parent-Teacher Interviews, Year 9 2020 Applications Close this week
The term is fast coming to an end with less than a fortnight remaining in what has been a very busy term. The staff and I have been pleased with how the 65 new boarders have settled into boarding life, made easier by the way the returning boarders have welcomed them into the Argyle family. Our Prefects and Senior Leaders have provided a high level of care for the boys in their dorm and will be treated to an all-you-can-eat meal at 'Gengys' next week as a thank you from the hostel staff and boys for their leadership and commitment this term.
Term 1 concludes Friday 12th April
The hostel closes for the term next Friday 12th April at 5.30pm. School finishes at 2.15pm on that Friday, so the boys are able to depart at this time. If your son is taking weekend leave this weekend it is advisable that he takes home his personal belongings he won't be needing next week.
Christchurch Tragedy
The school and hostel has paid tribute to the victims and families of those killed or injured, by standing with our Muslim students at a special assembly on Wednesday 20th March, for our senior students.
A 'Service for Christchurch' was held out the front of the main school reception area at 11.05am on Friday morning 22nd March and was well attended by both students and staff.
Service:
Whaikōrero – Wikiriwhi Rangiawha
Poem read by Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead
Muslim prayer
Pasifika prayer
Paimārire karakia – Wikiriwhi Rangiawha
Moments silence
Song - I know the Lord
Explanation of haka – Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead
Haka - Led by Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead
As a hostel, at our weekly Tuesday evening House meeting, on 19th March, we provided the boys with some tangible actions they could choose to do, if they wanted to pay their respects: e.g.
Visit a mosque nearby and leave a sign or flowers to show their love and solidarity.
Send a message of love and solidarity to the Muslim families.
Call or text a friend who is a Muslim. Let them know they are not alone.
Show respect to family, neighbours, strangers, fellow boarders. Courtesy is contagious.
An opportunity to create some art/tributes e.g. write a card.
I was present with a van load of senior Argyle House boarders at the mosque on Friday 22nd March, with Deputy Headmaster, Mr Stuart Hakeney and the Head of Mathematics Faculty, Mr Charlton Thompson. We were all greeted and welcomed inside, as we paid our respects to the Muslim community.
Parent-Teacher Interviews
These commence this week, with Year 9 on Thursday 4th April, 4.30 - 7.00pm and Years 10 - 13 the following week on Monday 8th April, 4.30 - 7.00pm.
Interview bookings became available on Friday 29th April on the Parent Interview website: https://parentinterviews.co.nz/app/login
Feel free to take your son along to the report evening with you.
House Haka Competition
Argyle House won the Hamilton BHS House Haka competition on Wednesday morning 3rd April, having performed in front of the whole school in Gymnasium 1. The Argyle haka was led by Kaitataki (Best Leader), Head Prefect, Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead. This moved us to within half a point of Steel House, who sit on top of the table overall, after 4 events completed. House Touch concludes on Monday 8th April, with both senior and junior teams competing from all 6 Houses. Hopefully, Argyle can do enough to finish top after all 5 events this term have been completed.
Matua Mita Graham (Senior Master) and Hakaraia led the Argyle boys extremely well in holding numerous evening haka practice sessions leading up to this major House event.
This is my final newsletter for the term. I hope you've enjoyed reading and viewing the many pictures and video clips in the newsletters. The staff and I enjoy taking the various footage and putting it together to provide a snapshot of all the good things that happen within the Argyle environment. It is a happy place, especially after winning the House Haka competition this week and hosting a very enjoyable social with Sonninghill Hostel. The feel-good factor is evident throughout the hostel.
I'm sure you will all enjoy some quality time with your son over the holiday period. Please remember that there is a Teacher Only Day on Monday 29th April. The hostel will re-open for the new school term on Monday evening from 5.30pm on this day. We would like all boys to have returned by 7.30pm on Monday evening to allow for a settled start to the new term. However, if your son is returning by 8.00am on Tuesday morning 30th April, please indicate this later return time on Boardingware so the staff are aware. The first school day of Term 2 is on Tuesday 30th April.
Kind regards

"This haka represents an act of unity and solidarity, it is a sign of love and support for the families of those who were tragically lost, it is an expression of grief and mourning those who passed on, and an act of defiance against those who seek to suppress our sense of freedom, safety and Aotearoatanga - what makes us".
Poem read by Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead at the 'Service for Christchurch':
March fifteenth twenty nineteen
One of NZ’s darkest days
Innocent people lost their lives
while in their place of praise
No matter where you’re from,
your skin colour or your race
Us Kiwis pride ourselves
On being free and safe
But all that changed on Friday
Our innocence stripped away
50 of our family lost their lives
and we’re struggling with what to say
In lieu of finding the right words
to ease this harrowing pain
this is a toast to all NZers
especially those who died in vain
To you, our Muslim family
we’re sorry for this coward’s derange
you’re part of our Kiwi family
and that will never change
We want you to feel welcome
and we will grieve with you for years
we’re here to support you all
Through the grief and tears
To the victims who lost their lives
and families dealing with such torturous loss
Thanks for standing together with kindness
and showing the hate whose boss
To the cops who apprehended him
and the Force defending our land
we admire your composure
during a time we’ll never understand
To the paramedics, doctors & nurses
who dealt with immediate grief
without you and your strength,
We’d have found little relief
To the teachers who protected our children
During a time you couldn’t be prepared
Thank you for being so brave
When you were also scared
To all reporters, announcers & journalists
For keeping us up to date
Despite grieving yourselves
And dealing with the hate
To our Prime Minister and Mother,
Jacinda Ardern
Thank you for taking swift action
As 4.8 million Kiwis yearn
You’ve set an amazing example
of the values we strive for
Compassion, inclusion and kindness
you’ve radiated them and more
To the people of NZ,
Thank you for spreading love
we’ve shown the world how to combat hate
and completely risen above
Hate has no place here
and we’ll never bow down to those sins
remember to be kind
because, love always wins
.

Mufti Day Thursday & Gumboot Friday
Emailed to Parents/Caregivers Tuesday 2nd April
Dear Parents/Caregivers
This week we have two opportunities to support worthwhile causes.
As part of his "I am Hope" Charity, Mike King is hoping to raise money through Gumboot Friday to provide free counselling for young New Zealanders battling mental health issues.
Here at Hamilton Boys' High School, we have a "Chapters Program" for senior students wishing to be part of promoting mental health in the school. We also have a very passionate group of teachers involved, who are in full support of this cause.
This Friday, if students wish to wear gumboots with their school uniform they are welcome to do so. If they do, we ask each boy to give a gold coin.
If students do not wear gumboots, they can still donate a gold coin to this cause if they wish to.
As a school we encourage students to donate, but it is optional.
All money donated goes straight into the "Gumboot up New Zealand" account.
The second opportunity this week is Mufti Day this Thursday, 4 April.
If students wish to wear mufti, we ask them to please bring $2.00.
All funds raised go to Diabetes Youth.
Thank you
