HBD's Breakdown of our Top Picks

Revolutionary (10/1)

Coming off three straight wins including the G3-Withers and the G2-Louisiana Derby Revolutionary enters the Derby in amazing form. The most impressive aspect of Revolutionary's prep schedule was his win at the Louisiana Derby where he spotted the field 12 lengths at the start of the race, went wide around both turn and won under pressure down the stretch. Add three time Kentucky Derby winner Calvin "the Rail" Borail, and the draw of the #3 post. This is HBD's top pick for the derby, and with a morning line of 10-1 Revolutionary could produce some great value on the boards as well.

Check out his win at the Louisiana Derby Below.

2013 Louisiana Derby - Revolutionary

Undefeated in his four starts and coming off impressive wins in both the G1-Wood Memorial and the G2-Tampa Bay Derby Verrazano could easily open as the favorite for the Derby. With amazing tactical speed, Verrazano could be in prime position coming down the stretch to take the Derby home. On the negative side, he would have to be the first horse since 1882 to win the Derby without racing as a 2 year old.

Goldencents (5/1)

Winner of the G1-Santa Anita Derby and the G3-Sham Stakes, Goldencents may be ready to strike in Kentucky. His running style lends itself to a nice run at the roses as he used the Santa Anita Derby to come from just off the pace in a strong win rather than press the pace as he did in his earlier wins. One question about Goldencents is the jockey choice of Kevin Krigger, who has will make his first Derby start this year on Goldencents.

Itsmyluckyday (15/1)

The most seasoned horse in the field Itsmyluckyday will run his 11th race when he takes the gate on Saturday from post position 12. Winner of 5 lifetime starts including the G3-Holy Bull and solid second to Orb in the Florida Derby. Itsmyluckyday is coming into his 2nd start off a layoff and probably needed that Florida Derby to get set-up for the Derby. A strong 2nd place finish to Orb after the layoff could indicate perfect form heading into Kentucky. Another great aspect to this horse is his history in the rain. Itsmyluckyday has already ran a Beyer of 103 under sloppy conditions at Calder last year.

Best Longshot: Falling Sky (50/1)

This is an interesting race for Falling Sky. Had Falling Sky drawn inside of Giant Finish and Goldencents I would have liked Falling Sky even more. But the reality is that Falling Sky could have a shot at the lone speed in this race. If the race unfolds and Falling Sky gets a soft pace on the lead, he could easily be there near the finish, especially completing the backends of some of your exotics. This is another horse to watch if its really wet and sealed on Saturday at Churchill. The wet sealed ground of Churchill could create sloppy goo and create a nice speed bias for Falling Sky to take advantage of.

It's Raining, It's Pouring, Which Horse is Soaring?

The weather report for Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky looks pretty wet. And the dirt track at Churchill Downs has history of creating some interesting outcomes when the dirt gets sloppy or sealed. One thing to look for when it gets wet, is to keep an eye on the previous races and to make sure to look for any speed or rail bias that may come up due to the current weather conditions. Below is a look at races 6-11, including the Kentucky Derby, highlighting horses who have run well under sloppy or sealed conditions.

7-Berlino Di Tiger (Foriegn shipper used to running on heavier ground)
