St. Lawrence Every Friday Note

October 29, 2021

Weekly Update!

We have reached one of the busiest and most festive times of the year. No matter how you look at it the next two months will be providing lots to enjoy. From Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, to All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and Advent, to changing leaves and snowy days, there is a lot to look forward to! With so much to look forward to, I have always felt like the 2nd quarter of the school year is the fastest moving quarter of the year. With that being said, it is very important to stay on top of the students activities this quarter, because it is easy to have the quarter get away from them in regards to falling behind. The quarter ends on Friday, December 17th.

Also, please remember when dropping students off after school has started, please make sure to sign the students in at the office. This is extremely helpful in making sure that a student's attendance is recorded accurately. Our practice is that the homeroom teacher takes attendance and enters lunch counts by 7:50. When a tardy student shows up after that time, the office updates the attendance and lunch count when they stop at the office.

Trunk or Treat

Saint Lawrence PFO is hosting Rams Trunk or Treat! October 29, 2021 from 6-8 PM. The parking lot will be open at 5 PM for those that want to pull their cars in and pass out candy! We need many cars to make this a fun event for the children! Please consider donating candy (turn in to the school office) or decorating your car and passing out candy. The 8th grade concession stand will be open for some delicious treats! Proceeds from concession will support the 8th grade trip to Washington DC. We will have a haunted hayride and proceeds from the tickets sold will go to the eighth grade class.

Food Drive Information

Each year, the students of St. Lawrence participate in a canned food drive to stock up our shelves before Thanksgiving for those in need. We are excited to participate in this event again. The food drive will last from Monday, October 11 through Friday, November 12.

Each class has a designated product that they are to bring. The students will bring their items in at any point starting Monday. There will be boxes in each classroom to turn them in. Each class will be competing for a class reward. There will also be a school reward if we reach our goal. More information on the school goal and class prizes will be sent out in the next communication.

Here are the class items:

Nationality Survey

We are conducting a survey at St. Lawrence to celebrate our diversity. Your participation is needed and is anonymous. In order to better understand our students and their immediate family, we would like to know where in the world we are form. Which countries are represented in your household? For example, I was born in the USA, my wife was born in the USA, and my son was born in the USA.

Attendance/Mass Policy

Our school day starts at 7:25 am and ends at 3:15 pm. During this time, instruction is taking place. Tardiness and early pick up, although at times necessary, interfere with the required instruction time for your child. Consistent tardiness or early departure greatly hinders your child's ability to learn and become proficient in the required standards set forth by the state of Indiana. Please be supportive of our family handbook and honor the arrival and pick up times to ensure that your child receives the very best education possible.

A note to this. If you are late arriving on a Wednesday or Friday, which are our scheduled school mass days, please take your child to the church prior to 9:15 am. Mass is a special opportunity to spend time twice a week with Jesus in worship. It is a part of our school day and one of the truly special opportunities that students enrolled in a Catholic school get to participate in that they would not be able to otherwise. This is considered part of our curriculum. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is in school to be able to be a part of this time.

Covid 19 Updates

In an attempt to provide even more transparency about how the school is interacting with Covid-19 in the school, I will start to include numbers school wide for the past week. I will continue to send communication through Jupiter as I have done all along as it pertains to your child and their class. However, this will be a general count for the entire school. I will only include the numbers of cases that apply to our students or quarantine information based on exposure from the school. For example, if a student is on quarantine because a family member, or a person outside of the school, identified them as a close contact, that information will not be offered. If a student is on quarantine based on exposure to a fellow student or teacher at St. Lawrence who has tested positive, that will be included.

For the week of October 16-29:

Confirmed Positive Results: 0

Quarantined students: 0

The governor passed an executive order stating that close contacts who have been exposed to a positive Covid-19 case at school will only need to quarantine if they are experiencing symptoms.

School Lunch Box

School meal programs nationwide are experiencing many of the same supply chain issues that have impacted restaurants and grocery stores throughout the pandemic. Our school nutrition team is committed to ensuring students have access to healthy meals each school day. Just as families had to make substitutions on grocery lists last year, St. Lawrence may have to make some last-minute changes to our regular menus, based on availability. We hope parents and students will be patient as we sort through these supply chain issues, particularly with breakfast items such as cereal. PBJ Uncrustables are not available either. The upside? Ingredients for our many scratch prepared foods are more readily available and we've been trying new recipes weekly. We remain committed to providing nutritious and delicious meals so that students are ready to learn!
