January 21, 2022

For the past 7 years, many YCS elementary schools have been hosting the weeklong event of The Great Kindness Challenge along with the rest of our country & world. The aim of the project is to challenge students to perform 50 kind acts in 5 days. The premise is by doing many kind acts over many days, a habit of kindness is grown and extended beyond the week. YCS school(s) have shown a decrease in discipline and bullying incidents since implementation. This year, the Great Kindness Challenge will be taking place in all YCS elementary schools from January 24-28, 2022.

Want to get in on the fun? Print out the attached Kindness Challenge Checklist (English Version & Spanish Version) or the Family Version of the checklist (English Version & Spanish Version) and try a few of them...see how many smiles you create along with your own.

Thank you to Yelm’s Rotary Club for continued support by fully funding this movement each year!

In celebration of Kindness Week at the end of January, all Yelm Community Elementary Schools are rallying together to help students with food insecurities. Together, we are doing a Chili Drive, to collect as much canned chili as we can to help support students over the summer. Please bring canned chili to school, either with your student or brought to the office foyer. Thank you for your act of kindness and generosity!

Popcorn Thursdays

Students have the opportunity to purchase a popcorn treat for just 50¢. Popcorn punch cards are available for purchase so that you never forget those pesky quarters again! Huge thank you to our PTO for providing this again as our students look forward to this with great anticipation!

Visitor/Volunteer/Adults on Campus

Visitors/Volunteers need to sign in at the office on the kiosk and get a visitor’s badge. Only staff members are allowed on the playground.

When dropping students off in the morning, they should be dropped off at the curb and then they will head to either breakfast or recess. If your students need help getting to class please bring them to the office.

Friday Assemblies

Prairie Assemblies have been a long-standing tradition. In our current environment, we are not able to have parents attend. To stay connected with our families we will be posting the assembly each Friday on our website.

School Board Appreciation

January is School Board Appreciation Month and all of us who are a part of Yelm Community Schools from staff—to parents—to students owe a deep debt of gratitude to these volunteers. Few people fully understand the scope and implications of school board service. When citizens elect a school board, they’ve given those few members the great responsibility of steering public education in the communities they represent. Our school board takes that responsibility and the public trust very seriously. They dedicate enormous hours to their work both in and outside of board meetings. Attending school events, preparing for meetings, reading financial reports, agendas, and proposals, and making a host of decisions that impact the well-being of our children are just a few of the regular activities our board members participate in through their service.

I have had the privilege of working with the Yelm School Board for the past 17 years and sincerely appreciate the collegial way they show leadership and support for our children, the employees, and the community of Yelm.

If you wish to contact a school board member, their information is listed on the Yelm Community Schools webpage.

Sincerely,

Deb McLaren
