In Language Arts we are beginning our study of Nonfiction texts. The students have chosen nonfiction books that are accessible and interesting. We began by talking about how good readers connect what they are learning to what they already know. Now we are discussing how and why authors use text features to share meaning. In the upcoming weeks, the students will continue to read and explore the different ways author's organize informational texts.
As your child continues to work on their 40 Book Challenge, encourage them to choose some nonfiction texts and practice what they are learning in class.
Math
We will begin our unit on Adding/Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators. Students will be learning the standard procedure as well as solving by using a number line. We will incorporate a couple mini-lessons to cover improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Continue practicing multiplication facts nightly, students are tested every Friday. We still have several students wanting to earn their passports to be placed on the wall.
Science
In science we are studying changes to the earth. Specifically, we are looking at weathering, erosion, and deposition. Can you find evidence of wreathing and erosion in your neighborhood? Encourage your fourth grader to look for these changes close to home. You can also talk to your child about changes to the earth's surface in regards to recent natural disasters.

Morning Drop Off
As the cold weather moves in, the morning drop off traffic increases! To help avoid the traffic, please consider these two options:
1. Dropping off before 7:30am. Students can immediately enter through the gym door in the front and wait with teachers and their grade level for the 7:30am bell to ring. There is much less traffic at 7:20am!
2. Using the additional drop off lane in the South side parking lot. This is open to all students. Teachers and student greeters will be there to welcome students every morning!
