Mayfield Messenger

A Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Greetings Mayfield Community!

October is Bullying Prevention Month. I want to share a message that it is important that parents, teachers, administrators and students work together to identify bullying within school and the community. Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.

At Mayfield we are doing several things to help prevent bullying. We have our Bobcat Block every morning from 7:15 to 7:47 and our staff and students work on social emotional learning skills. Students participate in morning circles that helps build a caring community within the classroom. We encourage our students in the hallways to greet their peers and other adults in a friendly manner. We have a great school counseling group that meets regularly with students to help students address typical peer to peer interactions for this age group. Finally, we have a great group of educators who are focused on teaching the whole child. We believe that academics and social emotional learning are equally important and we emphasize both throughout the year.

Clubs at Mayfield

I want to congratulate the Green Team and Coach Gates for winning the 6th Grade Boys Basketball Championship on Tuesday! There were two very competitive games and the Green Team came out victorious. I'm extremely impressed by the sportsmanship that was displayed by our students throughout the season. I also want to thank Mr. Krizmanich for organizing this activity for our students. It's always a great time and so well organized.

We continue to offer several clubs throughout the year. Currently we have the Garden Club running and the Robotics club running. We have an extensive list of clubs that will be offered throughout the year.

The next club that is starting will be our Anime club and it will be sponsored by Mrs. Hammad. Permission forms to sign up went home with students in the Friday folders.

When the clubs begin to organize we will be making announcements on the morning announcements and we will also include information in our Mayfield Messenger.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, otherwise known as PBIS, is part of Manassas City Public Schools in all 9 schools. PBIS is focused on recognizing students for going above and beyond and be proud, positive contributing members to our school community. On Monday we held a PBIS event with the students during their encore time. The encore teachers did an outstanding job at putting together a fun and entertaining program for the students who did the right thing everyday during the first 9 weeks of school. There were a lot of students who got to participate and this was just another great example of the positive community building going on at Mayfield Intermediate.

Thank you to Ms. Broskey and Ms. Hammad and our PBIS committee for organizing this school-wide event. Thank you to our encore teachers for supervising the event and coming up with the games for students to play.

Attention Young Writers: Here is another great essay contest!
