YoungArts' winners consist of the nation’s most promising young artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts. Selected from a competitive pool of applications and representing artists from across the country, YoungArts winners gain access to one of the most comprehensive programs for emerging artists in the United States, offering financial, professional and artistic development opportunities over the course of their careers.
Selected through a blind adjudication process conducted by an independent panel of highly accomplished artists, the winners represent the top 10 percent of applications. Of each year's winners, some are awarded for excellence in multiple disciplines at various levels. Winners are named Finalists, the organization’s highest honor, Honorable Mention and Merit winners.
Finalists have the opportunity to participate in National YoungArts Week in Miami in January. All winners become part of a professional network of over 20,000 alumni artists and are eligible to participate in YoungArts’ regional programs, including YoungArts Miami in February, YoungArts Los Angeles in March and YoungArts New York in April.

WINTER WEATHER PROCEDURES - KEEPING STUDENTS & STAFF SAFE
WINTER WEATHER PROCEDURES - KEEPING STUDENTS & STAFF SAFE
Education is important and every missed day of school represents lost learning opportunities. However, the Boise School District’s primary concern is for the safety of all students, including students riding busses and walking or biking to school. If students cannot safely travel to school or if schools are not able to operate safely because of citywide dangerous weather conditions, school may be cancelled.
We will not cancel school on days with normal wintery conditions. Light snowfall, cold mornings or areas of ice are not sufficiently dangerous to force the closure of schools. With proper precautions including appropriate clothing, road deicing, and careful driving, students can travel to and from school safely.
The Boise School District covers over 450 square miles of Ada County. We recognize that conditions vary throughout the District, even from street to street, in some cases. Conditions may be extremely dangerous in one area, while perfectly safe everywhere else. If parents believe it is too dangerous for their children to travel to school they have the option to keep their children home. If school is cancelled, it will be cancelled for the entire District.
The most frequent dangerous weather conditions facing Boise schools are:
SNOW: Snow levels within the City of Boise are typically light or moderate. However, there is always the potential for a heavy snowfall to make traveling by vehicle or on foot dangerous. Historically, most snowfall only results in slow traffic and minor accidents throughout the City. Normal snowfalls would not result in school closures.
COLD: Frigid temperatures are more serious than snow when making school closure decisions. On bitterly cold days our concern is for students walking to school. Extremely cold weather also impairs our ability to get busses running, which causes delays in pickup routes, delays which are much more dangerous to riders because of the low temperatures.
ICE: Ice is our most dangerous winter weather condition. Freezing rain and/or refreezing of melted snow make our roads, streets and sidewalks extremely treacherous for pedestrians, and vehicles. Icy conditions may force us to close, even if it appears that no other dangerous conditions exist.
How is the decision made to close or not to close school? Representatives from transportation agencies, the weather bureau, the highway district, city and county law enforcement agencies, and school administrators, including the Superintendent, check the roads and monitor information throughout the night and early morning hours. We confer by telephone early in the morning to reach a decision.
If school will be closed, we will communicate in a number of ways to spread the word. In addition to notifying local radio and television news stations, we will send text & email messages to parents/guardians, send an emergency alert via the District’s mobile app, post closure information at www.boiseschools.org, on each school’s website, and on our Twitter, Facebook, Instagram accounts. Parents/guardians can sign-up to receive emergency text messages by texting “Y” or “YES” to the number 67587. Non-parents (e.g., other family members, staff, news media, etc.) can also receive emergency text alerts via the Boise School District's mobile app (available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store). View a brief video further explaining our Inclement Weather Procedures on our Emergency webpage.
Updates and Information from Career Center
Seniors:
Deadlines are becoming even more important at this time of year. Please check your colleges deadlines to make sure you know when your application and other materials need to be submitted.
January 1 is looming for some colleges. If this is one of your deadlines, know that no one is in the offices over Christmas so please make sure you have your January 1 requests (letters, transcripts, etc. completed BEFORE Christmas break).
Transcripts must be requested on Naviance!!!
Please remember that we need at least a day to complete the request for a transcript so plan accordingly with your request. In other words, a transcript does not get sent just because your requested it, our Registrar will complete the process by seeing your request and send the transcript to the receiving school.
Haven’t heard from your colleges?
Have you checked your personal email to see if your colleges have contacted you?
Students please make sure you are checking email to ensure all requests from your colleges have been fulfilled.
Still nothing? Call the admissions office of your college to see if they have your application on file and/or anything else that may be missing from your application file.
Get the FAFSA completed!! There’s still time!!
As of this writing (11/27) we have had 133 students complete the FAFSA (29% of the senior class). Last year by the end of the year we had 60.4% of our senior class who had completed a FAFSA. So while there is a long way to go to make that goal, there is plenty of time but don’t delay.
For our Idaho colleges, the next big deadline is February 15. BSU and ISU require the FAFSA and all admissions materials to be submitted by this date for scholarship purposes.
Don’t forget Scholarships on Naviance!
I currently have over 80 scholarships listed on Naviance. Please take some time to look through the list and consider applying for as many as you can.
The OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP is especially important for seniors planning to attend college in Idaho. If you have a 2.7 cumulative GPA or higher make sure you complete this scholarship!

Sophomores and Juniors
PSAT SCORES:
Beginning Dec. 10, students will be able to access their PSAT scores online.
To access scores, students who already have a Collegeboard account will log in to see their scores.
Students who do not have a Collegeboard account will need to set up an account. Students should go to www.sat.org to set up an account. Please make sure you put your account information into your phone or somewhere that is easily accessible for future use!
Parents: I encourage you to allow your students to do this, please. This is an account that your student will need to access on a fairly regular basis and they need to have access! Students cannot have multiple accounts. This will cause many problems for them if more than one account is set up in their name!
Students are encouraged to link their PSAT scores to the Khan Academy which will help them study and prepare for the next PSAT in October 2019 (for sophomores) or the SAT that juniors will take in April of 2019.
Within the next week, I will be sending another link to a video that will explain the results of the PSAT. Students and parents seeing this video will understand there is more to the PSAT results than just numbers!
Juniors:
Mark your calendar...you will be taking the official SAT on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 during the school day. There is nothing you need to do to register for this test...just study! This score will be used for admissions and scholarship purposes.
College-bound juniors are encouraged to consider taking the ACT during the spring, as well. Juniors will need to register on their own and take the test on the national test days, Saturdays.
Sophomores:
I am currently having English 10 classes come to the Career Center where I introduce sophomores to the Career Center and what I can do for them. I give a presentation to talk to them about the importance of education beyond high school…no matter what kind of education…apprenticeships, Career-Technical education, military, etc.
The next step we will take together is to complete a Career Interest Inventory called, “Cluster Finder” at the end of January. My hope is to relate their inventory results with the classes they can register for next year.

Overall, we took 5th in the 5A school division. We broke 7 of our 11 events into semifinals and 4 of the 7 went to finals. We took 3rd place in Original Serious, a piece written and performed by Reagan Mayfield and Christian Howington.
These students represented Capital with class and grace. I was so proud of the respect they showed to other schools and the way they interacted with other competitors. They were the perfect example of a team that played with heart and soul. Please tell them job well done if you see them.

Check out the following news items from your Golden Eagle Booster Club.
1) Capital Cares Fund - The Golden Eagle Booster Club is coordinating a gift card campaign to provide our social worker with additional resources (food, clothing, gas, hygiene products, etc.) for our students and their families. Approximately 40% of Capital’s students receive free/reduced meals. In addition, our school has an average of 30-35 homeless youth each year, many of whom are self-supporting and living on their own. Last school year, this amazing program raised $1,800 and assisted approximately 75 Capital students. If you can help, please sign up for the card(s) at http://signup.com/login/entry/765608180086 and bring them to the school's main office by Friday, December 7.
2) Senior Parents – The Graduation Party for the Class of 2019 will be held at Wahooz, immediately after graduation, from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. (the date for graduation comes out towards the middle of December.) The cost per graduate is $60. A ticket to the party would make a great Christmas gift for your senior. If you are interested, tickets may be purchased from Jacqui Rogers, registrar at the school, from December 10 – 20, during the school day. If have questions about making a ticket purchase, contact her at jacqui.rogers@boiseschools.org or call the school office at (208) 854-4490. Tickets will also be sold in the spring.
3) Distinguished Alumni – The school will be recognizing three distinguished alumni at the student academic ceremony in the spring. Please nominate an alumnus who has demonstrated personal, professional, or civic accomplishments since graduation from Capital High School. The nomination form has been attached to this email; please submit the completed form to chsgoldeneagleboosters@gmail.com by January 15, 2019. Last year’s honorees were Toni Lawson, Curtis Stigers, and Bryan Stith.
4) Fred Meyer Rewards Program - The booster club is enrolled in the program. Family and friends of Capital High School can support our fundraising efforts by linking their Fred Meyer Rewards Card to the booster club’s account (NPO # ET677) at www.fredmeyer.com/communityrewards. The booster club will receive a donation when you shop using your Rewards Card, and you will still earn your rewards points, fuel points, and rebates. We currently have only 37 households linked to our account. Please link your card today.
