Banned Books Week!
Banned Books Week is September 25th through October 1st. Banned Books Week is "an annual event celebrating the freedom to read" (http://www.ala.org/bbooks/bannedbooksweek). Hundreds of books are challenged in school and public libraries every year. This can limit everyone's access to information and limit their first amendment rights. To learn more about Banned Books Week, visit http://www.ala.org/bbooks/bannedbooksweek
Teachers! If you're interested in collaborating on a lesson centered around Banned Book Weeks and access to information, please email me. I would love to plan something with you. If you decide to do something in your classroom, please take some time to speak with me about it so that you are as informed as possible about the celebration.
Freshman Library Orientation
In two weeks, the Freshmen will be coming to visit the library in their English classes so they can learn where things are and what resources they have access to during their time at HTHS.
The orientation will include a scavenger hunt and some fun Post-it surveys about what they love about the library and what they think would make the library better.
Independent Reading Initiative
This year I'm planning to kick off an independent reading initiative. In place of the Fall Read or December Read that we've done the past few years, I'll be working with interested teachers to build independent reading into their class. The way they incorporate it will be completely up to them, but I'll be talking with their students about reading for knowledge and leisure. My hope is that I can introduce students to at least one book they love before they leave HTHS.
Teachers! If you're interested in participating, please email me. I'd love to work with you on how we can encourage your students to read. I would also love to do a little personal shopping for your students to try and recommend the right book.
New Books!
We've got a few new books in the library and I've just finished a new book order that will include some of the popular Summer titles.
HTHS Library Website
The HTHS Library website got a redesign this summer. I'll be working to add resources to it as I have the time this year. If you have any suggestions for things you think would be helpful on the website, please email me with suggestions.
MackinVia Coming Soon!
MackinVia is a digital content management system that allows me to buy and distribute ebooks and digital audiobooks. Using a grant from our wonderful Trussville City Schools Foundation, I purchased some ebooks and audiobooks this Summer. I'm starting with assigned reading and I hope I'll be able to add leisure reading, as well. I'm currently working on getting the students added to the system, so they should have access before the end of the month.
