Social Emotional Learning Monthly Theme - SELF MANAGEMENT
Self-management, which is also referred to as “self-control” or “self-regulation,” is the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations.
SUCCESS STARTS WITH SELF MANAGEMENT
Success starts with self-management. In order to be productive, successful and happy, you need to develop your self-management skills.
Responsibility:
Taking responsibility for your actions is the first step. Prioritise your most important responsibilities. Take care of tasks as they come up.
Productivity:
Proper planning and time management are the key to getting the most out of your day.
Time Management and Organizational Skills for Students
2. Create a schedule for studying and breaks. Set a timer for uninterrupted study time. Try to remove any distractions. Take a few minutes to relax during study time. Take this time to stretch, get a snack, check your phone, or just relax. Make sure to also set a timer for your break so that you can get back to studying.
3. Try to do large projects one step at a time. Divide the work into smaller tasks. Work on one task at a time. This will help you not feel so overwhelmed.
4. Eliminate the things that waste your time during the day. Figure out what takes away time from your work (video games? Social media?). Once you figure out what is causing you to waste time, try to use that time to be more productive. .
5. Make sure to always eat well, sleep well, and exercise regularly. If you have a healthy lifestyle, it will improve your concentration and productivity.

Ways to Manage Stress
Stress is part of being human. We all deal with stress at one point or another. We know that remote learning can be very demanding and stressful. Talk to your parents if you feel down or anxious and make sure you get help if it is difficult to manage. In the meantime, there are things you can learn to manage stress before it gets to be too much.
#1 — Exercise.
Physical activity can help improve your sleep. When you get a good night's rest then you will feel less stressed.
People who exercise also tend to feel less anxious and more positive about themselves. When your body feels good, your mind will be more peaceful.
#2 — Eat healthy meals.
A healthy diet can decrease your stress and improve your mood. Junk food can have the opposite effect.
#3 — Sleep.
A common side effect of stress is that you may have a difficult time falling asleep. Lack of sleep can increase your stress level.
Better sleep habits can help. This includes both your daily routine and the way you set up your bedroom. Habits that may help include:
- Exercise regularly.
- Get out in the sunlight.
- Avoid drinking caffeine close to bedtime.
- Set a daily schedule and make sure to add your bedtime.
- Don’t use your cell phone or computer at least 30 minutes before bed.
- Try to meditate or other forms of relaxation before bedtime. (*meditation video below)
#4 — Relaxation Techniques.
Yoga is a form of exercise, but it can also be a meditation. You can find many videos on YouTube. Yoga is excellent for lowering your anxiety and stress.
#5 — Deep breathing.
By breathing deeply you can change how your body responds to stress. It sends more oxygen to your brain and will calm the part of your nervous system that handles your ability to relax.
#6 - Connect with people.
Spend time with a close friend or family member who will listen to you. It is a great way to lower your stress. Also feel free to reach out to your teachers or school counselor. They are always willing to help.
#7 - Inner voice.
The voice inside your head sometimes can make you stress more. Remember that you are in control. You can turn those negative thoughts into positive thoughts.
#8 - Laugh therapy.
Laugh MORE! Laughter will improve your immune system and your mood for long periods time.
