Quote of the Week
Thank you to William Frost in Mrs. Gutierrez's class for the great quote.
Students spend time discussing this quote throughout the week. They discuss what they believe it means, why they believe the person said it. Finally they reflect on these questions and determine how they can apply it to their lives.

Vision screenings were held at Sussex Avenue School this month. Vision impairments in children are common, and uncorrected vision problems can impair child development, lead to behavior problems in the classroom, and ultimately interfere with literacy and learning if uncorrected. Early detection and treatment are critical. Also, visual functioning is a strong predictor of academic performance in school-age children, and visual disorders in childhood can continue to affect their health into adulthood.
Some signs that your child may be having issues may include, but are not limited to the following:
Eyes don’t "line-up"
One eye appears crossed or looks out
Eyelids are red-rimmed, crusted or swollen
Eyes are watery or red (inflamed)
Rub their eyes a lot and/or close or cover one eye
Tilts head or thrusts head forward
Has trouble reading or doing other close-up work
Holds objects close to eyes to see
Blinks more than usual or seems cranky when doing close-up work
States things are blurry or hard to see, or that they feel dizzy, nauseous, or has a headache after looking at work close-up
Squints eyes or frowns
Please remember that your child may still have an eye issue even if he or she does not complain or show any signs.
All 4th graders will have a mandatory screening this school year per NJ state law. However any student at any age can have their vision tested if they are having issues.
Our screening machine tests for 6 potential vision issues. We will keep all parents/guardians informed if a referral to a physician is recommended.
If you have any questions/concerns about vision screening and/or your child is having eye issues, please contact the health office as soon as possible. We hope we can help you get the answers and possible care your child may need in order for them to thrive socially and academically.
