Learner Profile


Ulysses is a 9 year old fourth grader. His birth mother is Chinese and his birth father is Italian American. He lives with is parents in a single family home. His father is a trained piano tuner and his mother is a food service worker. He has three adult half-sisters from his father's former marriages.

Academic Abilities

Ulysses is bilingual, being fluent in both English and Chinese, and additionally having limited Spanish conversation skills. He has made several trips to mainland China with his mother. His classroom performance is complicated by his behavior problems, which are inspired by his boredom with various tasks.

The U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Common Core of Data, 2014 lists that "Over the past decade, a span during which total student enrollment grew by only 4.9%, the proportion of schoolchildren in the United States who were English language learners (ELLs) grew by an astonishing 32%. Now English learners make up 9% of the student population". (August, McCardle, Shanahan, & Burns, 2014).

Social Interaction

Ulysses' is well liked by his peers. During the 2014/2015 school year he had several key friendships. His school year was complicated by an injury to his left leg while roller skating that left him confined to a wheel chair and eventually to crutches.
