MKG Messenger September 20, 2019
The Principal's Office
A quick reminder that attendance is extremely important to us here at MKG. We will be closely monitoring student's attendance this year. Absences are only excused with documentation from a physician. As part of the Massachusetts Accountability System, schools are monitored according to their level of chronic absences (both excused and unexcused). A student is considered to be chronically absent if they are absent more than 10% (18 days) of the school year.
UPCOMING EVENTS:

Assistant Principal
Please remember to talk to your children about riding the bus safely. Stress the importance of staying in seats as well as speaking respectfully to each other. The bus is a great opportunity for students to talk about the days events or to fill each other in on upcoming things that they may be excited to share about.
Counselors' Corner
Character Strong Word of the Month: Courage: to choose what is good, right, and kind even when it is hard or scary.
- Talk with your child about what used to frighten you as a child. Be open about how you courageously worked to overcome that fear. Talk about who helped you or what strategy helped you along the way.
- Talk about the things that frighten you as an adult today. Open up an honest conversation about how you work intentionally to show Courage often.
- Make a list over dinner about who are the people in your network that show Courage. How can you tell that they have Courage? Why is it important that they show Courage? How might their example help make your Courage stronger?
Grade 1
Our First Graders were very excited to participate in their first Open House! Our students have begun learning to use ST Math. They are learning to solve problems and are very engaged.
Grade 2
Grade 2 students are settling into our routines and rituals! The second grade teaching team enjoyed meeting so many awesome families at Open House! Our doors are always open!

Grade 3
The third grade teaching team was happy to meet so many families at our MKG Open House this week. Family and school connections are very important to student success. Encourage your child to discuss their school day. Check in with your child about their homework and reading each night. We are excited to start off our school year with positive communication and collaboration with families.
Grade 4
It is hard to believe that we are more than half way through September! Our fourth grade students continue to work on developing healthy academic and social habits and practices. We are building reading stamina during independent reading and by taking time each night to read at home. At Open House we had the opportunity to use our math estimation skills to guess the weight of a pumpkin in our classrooms. Our writing has focused on expressing the qualities and characteristics that make us unique and special individuals.
Grade 5
Grade 5 spent some time this week connecting with our history goals and learned about the United States Constitution on Constitution Day, September 17th. Permission slips also went home for our exciting trip in October to the Rhode Island Museum of Natural History, where we have a great activity about toys in space, visit a planetarium, and a scavenger hunt through the museums many rooms.
