Written Expression: Things You Can Do to Support Your Student with Dyslexia
One of the tools we utilize in the district is Don Johnston. Don Johnston has tools such as Snap & Read and Co-Writer. Co-Writer can be an asset to support students with their writing. Check out more on Co-Writer here: https://learningtools.donjohnston.com/product/cowriter/ . If you do not have access to a specific platform, any speech to text application can be extremely beneficial for students to tell their story and share what they have learned.
Are you looking for some other ways outside of technology to help? If so, you can use some of these support strategies:
- have student dictate ideas or brainstorm with you!
- Use a keyboard- Don't know how to type? There are multi-sensory keyboarding programs online for free! Here are two: https://www.dancemattypingguide.com/ and https://www.typing.com/
- Provide typed notes for students! Many students with dyslexia struggle and need to listen to get the content instead of focusing on the act of writing and miss the content completely!
- Give the gift of time. Many students need additional time, and if they have time to process, answer, and do the work, they will be successful.
Please feel free to reach out to your campus dyslexia teacher-therapist and/or district dyslexia personnel for support. There are so many things we can do, and we do better, together!
Dyscalculia
One major misconception is that many people think it is a related disorder to dyslexia. While students with dyslexia may, or may not, struggle with math, it is not considered a related disorder.
If you suspect your child has dyscalculia (specific learning disability in math), then reach out to the special education representative on your campus or district.

GISD Dyslexia Therapist Spotlight
Lisa Herrera, Dyslexia Therapist at Sewell Elementary, Sachse, TX
This is my 25th year to teach! This is my 6th year as a Certified Academic Language Therpaist (CALT) and prior to that I taught 3rd gr for 9 yrs. I also spent 10 years as an interventionist.
I earned my Bacherlors degree in Education from the University of North Texas, and was trained through Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Academic Language Therapy for dyslexia.
I love anything outdoors - working in the yard, gardening, spending time at the ranch, and riding 4 wheelers.
When I'm not working I spend every minute I can with my precious family!
