Monterey High School
Junior News October 2019
Welcome Parents!!!
With that said, there is still much to accomplish! Junior year is by far the hardest year for your child in high school. Encourage your child to do the following things to ensure success:
- Be prepared for class (i.e. homework, reading, etc.)
- Communicate with teachers when they are struggling
- Attend tutorials
- Keep up with grades (make sure you and your child have a Gradebook account)
LISD COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR
Monday, Oct 7, 2019, 05:30 PM
United Supermarkets Arena, Indiana Avenue, Lubbock, TX, United States
Courses Taken as Pass/Fail
- Graduation requirement must be fulfilled within the core area where pass/fail is requested
- Pre-AP and AP courses may not be taken as pass/fail.
- Student must have a minimum grade point average of 4.0.
Those achieving a grade of 70 or higher shall be awarded credit, but a numerical grade will not be recorded on the transcript nor included in the student's grade point average. The pass/fail grade will be indicated on the semester final grade. By taking a non-weighted class pass/fail, this grade is not calculated in the grade point average. Thus, the student is not penalized for taking a course that does not receive the extra grade points. Students taking 2nd semester courses pass/fail must declare their intent prior to the end of the 5th six weeks.
Deadline to turn in a Pass/Fail form to your alpha counselor is November 1st @ 3:55.

PARENT ACTION PLAN: 11TH GRADE
- Make sure your child meets with his/her school counselor.
- Encourage your child to set goals for the school year. Working toward specific goals helps your high-schooler stay motivated and focused.
- Help your child stay organized. Work with your 11th grader to make weekly or monthly to-do lists to keep on top of the tasks required for applying to colleges.
- Juniors will take the SAT in the spring so help your student prepare for this college admissions test.

PSAT AND COLLEGE BOARD
Additionally, this is a great look at what students can expect on the SAT (used for college admissions and scholarships). 11th graders will take the SAT during the school day this February. We will be creating their college board account November 12th & 14th if they have not already created an account. Students will be able to access their score reports, take individual practice tests, and get a wealth of other information to prepare them for college and beyond.
Students are now able to link their PSAT scores to Khan Academy for free through College Board. Go to www.satpractice.org for more information. This tool creates customized test review questions based on individual student areas of need. Students can download an app for Khan Academy and spend a few minutes daily practicing for this important test. Strong PSAT/SAT scores can translate into lots of scholarship money down the road! Encourage your child to take full advantage of these resources now.

Students can then research these careers and look at the level of education required for each to help them formulate a plan.
