5th Grade Music Notes

November 2019

Our First Quarter Learning Goals

  • I will be able to follow the rules of music while singing, dancing, and playing instruments
  • I will be able to READ MUSIC
  • I will be able to sing and write the words to the Star Spangled Banner
  • I will be able to hold and play my recorder, using good technique
  • I will be able to create my own music and movement pieces

Our Fifth Grade Concerts are in March!

We will once again be splitting our concerts into two sections due to the number of students on stage. This concert will be our "test" for the grading period and is a required component of your child's music grade. See below for your child's concert date.

  • March 3rd: JM 5th Grade Concert (5St/5Sm/5Pa) 6pm

  • March 5th: JM 5th Grade Concert (5Ba/5Me/5Pr) 6pm

Recorder Tests are Back!

We are slowly reviewing notes and songs from last year on the recorder. Later this month, students will be required to turn in one recorder playing test as a video. Instructions on how to complete this assignment (and when it is due for your child) can be found in the Music Google Classroom. Video tutorials for each of the songs are available on the music website if your child needs additional help.

Please help them by providing them a quiet space to practice and record their playing test PRIOR to the due date. (I always tell students not to wait until the last minute- that is when things always seem to go wrong!) If you have technical difficulties at home, don't hesitate to contact me at amslerclass@hobart.k12.in.us

Extra credit tests are also available as an option in Google Classroom! This is the only extra credit option for music class. See the posted assignment for due dates.

What Are "Mad Minute" Tests?

We have started Mad Minutes in Music! Students have 1 minute to name 30 note names that they need to have memorized. Memorizing note names improves students’ overall music reading performance; it decreases the amount of time to translate written music to instruments and allows students to move onto more challenging concepts.

Although the grades will be posted in the grade book, hang tight- they will be averaged at the end of the semester for a single Mad Minute grade. Your child can show you their past test scores in the Music Google Classroom on their chromebook. Please support your student by helping him/her practice with flash cards or the optional worksheets that are sent home!

If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Amsler!
