Academic Information
Math:
6 On:
We will have a Test on Tuesday, February 26th. This will cover area of triangles, area of regular and irregular polygons, identifying 3D shapes, drawing nets of 3D shapes, surface area of rectangular and triangular prisms, and volume. There will be a help session held Monday, February 25th at 8 am. After the test, we will be moving to Unit 6: Integers and their Opposites.
6 Advanced:
We are finishing up our 2D Geometry unit and will have our test on Thursday 2/28. This will cover area of 2D shapes(6.G.1), area and circumference of circles(7.G.4), equations in angles and triangles(7.G.5), types of triangles(7.G.2), and the Triangular Inequality Theorem(7.G.2). Students will have their study guide due on Wednesday 2/27.
After the test, we will be doing finding point on a graph to make a shape and find the area(6.G.3). We will identify 3D shapes and learn how to draw and label their nets(6.G.4). Then we will find the surface area of rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, rectangular pyramids, and triangular pyramids. We will then get into the volume of these 3D shapes(6.G.2,7.G.6).

Social Studies:
We will be starting our study of Latin American History on Feb. 25th. We have currently planned the unit test to be taken in two periods: Friday, March 22nd (written portion) and Monday, March 25th (multiple choice portion). In this first week of the unit, we will begin with Ancient Civilizations of Latin America - Maya, Inca, and Aztec. We will finish out the week learning about the Columbian Exchange (the introduction of Old World goods to the New World and vice versa) and how it transitioned into Triangle Trade.
The week of March 4th, we will continue our study of Latin American History by learning about the trials of slaves in Latin America and the cultural contributions made by people who were placed in slavery. We will also learn about the Mission System in Latin America and its role in spreading the Catholic religion and the Spanish and Portuguese languages. After learning about all these different influences on culture in Latin America (Ancient Civilizations, Columbian Exchange, Triangle Trade, Slavery, and Missions), students will have a quiz on the first portion of our Latin America History unit on Friday, March 8th.
Reading:
We will begin our last mini-unit in our Social Issues Book Clubs with Unit 3: Bringing Your Life and Others’ Lives to Your Reading. The final mini unit invites our young readers to deepen the connections they make to literature. The point of this is to appreciate how their own experiences are always a lens for their reading, whether they are aware of this or not. Later sessions within the mini-unit will make the act of connection more complex, first by pointing out that reading with others helps us see connections we would never make on our own. Students will learn that to truly make the most of bringing their lives to their reading, they need to consider connections between themselves and the villains of their stories, in addition to the connections to the heroes. We will tentatively end our unit with a Summative Assessment on Friday, March 8th.
Science:
We are about to begin our next unit - Astronomy! We will start off by studying seasons, the formation of the universe, and how our understanding of the solar system changes with new scientific advances.
On Wednesday, March 6th we will have a quiz over seasons, the big bang theory, and the Milky Way.
ELA:
In ELA, students have an upcoming Unit 3 Test on the following concepts: figurative language, author's purpose, mood and tone, poetic structure, and poetic sound devices. Students will also be asked general questions about a poem’s meaning and how a line, or stanza contributes to the next line or stanza, or to the poem as a whole.
The test will be Wednesday, February 27. A detailed study guide has been provided in Google Classroom. The study guide is due Tuesday, February 26.
For our next unit, we will be covering the art of effective persuasive speaking and writing. In the beginning of our unit, we will be looking closely at the impact of connotation by recognizing how a word’s emotional meaning differs from a word’s literal definition. We will then examine author’s perspective, and how that influences the way a text is written.

Other Help Session Info
- Help sessions provide an opportunity for students to gain extra practice in a particular subject area.
- Teachers rotate who leads each subject's help session each week. Therefore, students may go to any teacher's help session, even if they don't have that teacher.
- Students must come to sessions with questions, a pen/pencil, and paper.
- For the morning sessions, students will wait in the cafeteria until they are picked up by the teacher leading that session at 8:00 a.m. Students must be on time, and they must be attentive so that they can hear when their session is called. Late students will not be admitted down the hallway.
- For the afternoon sessions, students go directly to the teacher hosting the help session after the dismissal bell rings. Students must be picked up on time at 4:40 p.m. in front of the school.
