Welcome to week eight.

STREP THROAT

There are a number of children at our school who have had Strep throat recently. This is very contagious if not treated. Children may not return to school until they have been treated with antibiotics as we do not want other children or our staff being infected.

If your child has a very sore throat please do not send him/her to school to wait and see if it develops further, as this will be the contagious time. Please seek medical advice first.

Our craft table and construction area is very popular at the moment so if you have any empty small boxes / containers we would be very happy if you could send them along to school. We are in short supply. Please drop them off at Room 1

CHILDREN ARRIVING LATE TO SCHOOL

School starts at 9.00am each day. For children to be ready to start the day they should be at school by 8.55am. We have had a number of children arriving at school after the bell has rung recently. In most cases it is the same children on a regular basis. This causes the child anxiety about having to walk into the classroom late when the day has already started and they don't know what they need to do.

It is also disruptive and annoying for the teachers who are trying to devote their attention to the other children who are already starting their school work for the day. This is a sincere request to have children at school before the bell rings each day.

NEW PTA OFFICE BEARERS FOR 2021

Last week we held the PTA Annual General Meeting in our school staffroom. At this meeting the key office bearers for the year were elected.

My congratulations and sincere thanks to these parent who have stepped up to lead this group. I look forward to working with them to raise much needed funds for our school for items for our children which the MOE doesn't provide for.

TEACHER PAID UNION MEETINGS AND LEARNING CONVERSATIONS

The NZEI, the union for all teachers in NZ has informed us that they have arranged Paid Union Meetings on Tuesday 6 July starting at 9.30am. This is to discuss the upcoming bargaining for the teachers new Collective Agreement.

There will, therefore, be no school for children on this day but our Learning Conversations will continue as planned starting at 1.00pm when staff will be back at work.

A timetable for booking interview times for the Learning Conversations will be made available shortly.

TE AROHA MUSEUM 50th BIRTHDAY / MATARIKI CELEBRATION

Wednesday 30 June, 6pm @ the Museum.

Official welcome, karakia and then a karanga will call everyone to Future Te Aroha.

Zak Scott from Ngati Tumutumu will be doing a presentation on his impressions of Matariki.

Entertainment by the Te Aroha Primary School Kapa Haka Group.

Followed by light refreshments.

Entry is by way of a gold coin donation.

We are really excited to be performing as part of the Te Aroha Museum 50th Birthday and Matariki Celebrations on Wednesday 30 June at 6pm.

Thank you to the parents and whanau that have indicated that their child will be taking part in this special event.

This week our Letterland work is c,k and v and 3 letter words we can blend together with the sounds we have learnt. Keep practising the word blending at home, mastering sounding out and then putting the word together is an integral part of becoming an independent reader. I have added a few new parts to homework this week which have been sent home today. In Maths our class goal is counting backwards from 20 and to know the numbers that come before a given number to 20. The week will be filled with Matariki stories and art work. Here's hoping our weather will be better this week and we can get out and practise our running in preparation for cross country. Children are welcome to bring slippers to school to wear in class in the winter if they wish.

Rm 2 Miss Green

We welcomed Mrs Maisey to Room 2 again today while I was busy testing children. This week in phonics we are covering the digraphs th, sh and ch. We know a digraph is two letters but only one sound. We will be looking at words that begin with these sounds and being able to record them accurately. Last weeks writing assessments showed some great progress over the year so far. We look at using punctuation and capital letters correctly this week. Maths we continue to practise forming numbers correctly, counting forwards and backwards from given numbers and solving and recording problems/sums to 10 and 20 by counting all objects. On Thursday we had our whole school assembly which Waihou hub led. Room 2 shared their jellyfish art and a couple of facts from our writing we did about them. Did you know jellyfish don’t have brains!? Our minds were blown!!!!!!!

Room 3 tamariki were extremely proud to showcase their leaf and monster symmetry art during last week's assembly. Well done! I am proud of you too.

Reading: Spelling and reading books continue to come home. We have had a slight shuffle in reading groups and the books coming home may reflect this. Reading at home has been so beneficial for Room 3 and it shows in the progress that everyone is making.

Writing: Our focus this week is on editing our writing. We are looking closer at where full stops and capital letters are needing to be for our writing to make sense.

Maths: We are continuing on with our Geometry and Measurement unit this week.

Reminders for the week: Please remember homework notebooks and book bags everyday. Room 3 needs their notebook for classwork. We have our Library day on Friday. Please remember you can pop in and see me or contact me via Seesaw and email

Rm 5 Miss Entwisle

Our Spelling words this week are all about it and fl. We continue to uncover facts and information about Ancient Egypt as well as participating in hands on activities to help develop our understanding of this fascinating civilization. In Mathematics we will be looking at Multiplication and Division. Our Spelling words are shared each week via the Seesaw activity section. Mrs Bartram and Ms Bishop will continue to teach room 6 children until the end of the term.

Rm 7 Mrs Paul

As the weather seems to becoming very wintery.... It might be nice to start bringing slippers to school. They can easily be kept in the classroom and this will save room in the school bags.

In Maths this week we will be looking at time. Although we will be looking at both types, it is still really important that children can first and foremost use an analogue clock. Help them at home by stopping to ask them the time! Our reading and writing this week will be based around Matariki. It is great to see the children working well in mixed ability groups when we do this sort of thing. We will also be having a big push on Growth Mindset which is something we started late last week.

Rm 8 Mrs Young

Inquiry - Me and My Environment - Kaitiaki Guardian Proposals of our school. This week we will continue to plan what we can take care of in our local school environment. We will be in groups to plan and conquer our proposals.

Literacy - We will be immersed in all things Matariki.

Maths - This week we will continue our Multiplication and Division unit. Please continue to practice your tables at home.

Hands on -

Knitting - We are continuing with our knitting squares. Thank you Mrs Hazelton for casting these on. SOAP - We have been busy researching, naming and coming up with Room 8 fragrances. Mr Tee will help us through each step of the Soap making process.

Rm 9 Mrs Gamble/Mrs Hodgetts.

We had a successful week testing last week. Well done to all Room 9 students who worked super hard during this time.

Literacy: We will catch up with our Annual 2 text that we missed last week. We will be looking at Wealth

by Nick Ascroft. Guided reading groups will also resume this week. Those students who are reading a novel this term may need to catch up with readings for homework.

Maths: We will continue to develop our division knowledge. Some groups will also work on equations involving decimals.

Topic/Inquiry: We have made a fantastic start with developing our ideas on how we can improve and care for an area in our school. We have discussed the goals of the ideas, their importance and how we can fund them. Our planning for our written proposals are coming along nicely and these should be complete by the end of the week.

Homework: Revision of division and multiplication. 20 minutes reading each day. Weekly quiz. Extra reading and inquiry homework will need to be completed also. .

Rm 10 Mrs Brittenden

This week will be a huge week, with our focus on completing our Kaitiaki proposals for our Inquiry work. There are some great ideas being developed and it will be exciting to see these completed at the end of the week. There will be class time allocated to this task but students may require time at home to make sure that this is completed.

Reading and Writing - this will be linked and tied into our Inquiry work, so that we can develop an information report.

Maths - we will be exploring the concepts of time and temperature.

Welcome - Mrs Robertson will be teaching Rm 10 on Friday.
