CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

February 17, 2023

A Message from Ms. Santa

CDW Principals for a Day!

Thank you to the PTO for providing this fundraising opportunity to the CDW students! The "CDW Principal for a Day" winners were 5th grader, Aren Shnorhokian and 7th grader, Paul Alzapiedi.

On Thursday, February 16th, Principal Shnorhokian learned the ins and outs of CDW. There were a few tours throughout the day of the various hidden elements of the CDW building, including the Teacher's Room! He met with the Student Government Executive Board and even made a few announcements! Great job Principal Shnorhokian!

On Friday, February 17th, Principal Alzapiedi led the school in a Fire Drill, met with the Business Administrator, and saw the Teacher's Room as well! He was provided a tour of all of the "behind the scenes" rooms in the building. The highlight of the day was seeing computer activity via Go Guardian and checking out the school's security cameras. Way to go Principal Alzapiedi!

NEW INFORMATION

Week of Kindness

The Student Government led the CDW community through a week of focusing on kindness. Each day, the Student Government challenged the students to do something kind during the school day, and OTBN shared a kindness quote each day during the morning announcements.

Kindness Project:

Students who would like to participate should show the CDW community what kindness means through a poster, poem, or artwork that will be displayed throughout the school. Submissions are due Tuesday, February 28th, to Ms. Cohen in room 209. If you have questions, see or email Ms. Cohen.

Grade 5 Students are Shinetastic!

In addition to the ongoing Character Education programs Ms. Adamo (our school counselor) has been doing in Mr. Bambach's Social Studies classes this year, she began pushing into 5th grade language arts classrooms this week to provide SEL lessons through a program called, "Ignite Your S.H.I.N.E." The program began with the students learning the meanings and sign language behind the special acronym.

S: Self- Students will learn more about themselves.

H: Heart- What do they love to do?

I: Inspire- How can they give their best and not give up?

N: Navigate- What path do they want to take to reach their goals?

E: Exceptional- They will find out who they are meant to be.

The program's purpose is to help our 5th graders realize their strengths and goals as an individual and as a member of the CDW community. The program will continue throughout the remainder of 5th grade, and Ms. Adamo will pick up with the students again with new lessons when they become 6th graders.

The homework assignment for the parents is to ask your child(ren) how they are going to be SHINETASTIC!

Grade 8 NVOT Schedule Changes

Any NVOT schedule changes need to be emailed to Ms. Adamo (adamoj@nvnet.org) by March 1st. After March 1st, schedule changes will not be honored by NVOT.

Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, Ms. Cohen's classes presented slideshows to their section. They talked about different historical people that are known for great accomplishments. Each student was given a person such as, Kobe Bryant, Jackie Robinson, Mildred Loving, and Barbara Johnson, just to name a few.

Grade 5 Science Lab

Fifth graders discovered that the different parts in an M&M will behave differently in water due to properties of matter - each part is made of different molecules.

Math Lab

In Math Lab, the students are learning about three dimensional solids and volume. This week they made containers out of paper, calculated the volume, and compared which designs held the most popcorn.

Grade 7 Science Lab

Seventh graders used the scientific method to examine how different exercise affect heart rate.

National Junior Honor Society: Changemaker Projects

Eighth grade National Junior Honor Society members are hard at work on their Changemaker projects. Four different teams are working on projects such as paracord bracelets for Operation Gratitude, adoption kits for the Bergen County Animal Shelter, Kindness Rocks to spread positivity in the school community, and Troopons for Support Our Troops.

The Troopons/Operation Gratitude Letter Writing team recently spent time after school creating coupon collection boxes which will be placed in each homeroom. The homeroom that collects the most manufacturer coupons - both current and expired -- will win an ice pop dessert!

Physical Education Badminton Champions

Ms. Scalisi led the students through a Badminton Unit which ended this week through a tournament. Check out the winners for each grade level below.

5th grade: Carlo and Ethan, Isaac and Jungyeok

6th grade: Blake and AJ, Kai and Vincent

7th grade: Matt and Rihan, Markus and Jake

8th grade: Isaac and Matt, Noel and Daniel

Mrs. Franco's Class: Active in the Community

Mrs. Franco’s class had a great time on their community outing to the Pearl River ShopRite, Laundromat, and Pizzeria. The students participated in a tour of the different store departments and met the heads of each department and learned each department’s function and their importance within the store. The students then shopped for items to make a special Valentine’s Day snack. They ended their outing with a lovely lunch at Sorrento’s Pizzeria, where they practiced how to budget and order their favorite lunch.

Volunteer Opportunity for 7th and 8th Graders

The PTO needs 7th and 8th grade students to help hand out Pizza Kits at CDW on March 7th after school. If your child(ren) is interested, please click HERE to sign up.

NVOT is Proud to Present: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels!

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, based on the popular 1988 MGM film, takes us to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity. Sophisticated, suave with a good dash of mischief, this hysterical comedy features a delightfully jazzy score by David Yazbek (The Full Monty) and was nominated for a staggering eleven Tony Awards.

Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together, only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress, Christine Colgate, wins, and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!

The Nex-Trex Plastic Film Recycling Program is Back!

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

Please see the flyer below for more information!

Art Supplies Needed!

When you deliver the items to the main office, please label them with "Art Room." Thank you in advance for your support and generosity!
