Student Make-up Days for Hurricane Florence
The Lexington-Richland School District Five School Board has approved the first three make-up days lost due to Hurricane Florence. Students in School District Five will now attend school on the following dates:
- Monday, October 8. Students will attend school on this day, which was previously scheduled as a Staff Development/Teacher Work Day.
- Friday, March 29. Students will attend school on this day, which was previously scheduled as a Teacher/Student Holiday.
- Monday, April 22. Students will attend school on this day, which was previously scheduled as a Staff Development/Teacher Work Day.
The decision to close schools Sept. 11, 2018 – Sept. 14, 2018 was made under order of the governor as South Carolina prepared for the impacts of Hurricane Florence. The Board approved the three make-up days recommended by the district administration during a special-called Board meeting on Oct. 1.
Prior to the start of the current school year, the district included five potential make-up days for severe weather in the 2018-2019 calendar. Potential make-up days included Oct. 8, Nov. 6, Feb. 18, March 29 and April 22. The Nov. 6 day is no longer permitted as a make-up day, due to state guidelines closing schools on election day.
“We have been very intentional throughout the process, giving careful consideration to the make-up days before we brought them to the Board for approval,” said School District Five Superintendent Dr. Christina Melton. “We consulted with our principals, staff and district leaders to ensure our decision would provide the best possible way to make up lost instructional time with the least negative impact on our families.”

Walk Your Child to School Day - October 10th
H. E. Corley’s Walk Your Child to School Day is Wednesday, October 10th.
During this day parents, caregivers, faculty and staff are encouraged to walk
to school together. This is an activity with big benefits:
- It creates an awareness of how walkable your community is and
where improvements should be made.
- It is a great opportunity to teach pedestrian safety and identify safe
routes to school.
- It reminds everyone of the tremendous health benefits of regular, daily
walking.
The walk will begin at 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10th.
You can start from your home or from Friarsgate Park.
Friarsgate Park (1.1 miles)
From either starting place, you walk down Lord Howe Road to Riversong
Road. Turn right onto Riversong Road and walk up to the back of the
school. Finish in the back of the school by the cafeteria.
PTO FUND RUN
Our goal for Fund Run this year is $12,000. If each child brings in just $20.00 we can reach our goal! The money comes directly back to our school and students. Sponsor sheets have been sent home.
Let’s all get together and reach our Goal.
Save those Pop Tops
Please continue to save those pop tops! Our Preschoolers will collect the tabs from aluminum cans to give to the Ronald McDonald House. The money they receive for recycling the tabs provides a home away from home for parents and families of children who are hospitalized.
Save your tabs! Get your friends to save them! Bring them to
H. E. Corley weekly or monthly and give them to your teacher. Our wooden McDonald house is located near the front office.
Dear Parents and Guardians of H. E. Corley Elementary School,
We are partnering with BrightBytes, an educational research organization, in order to learn more about our students’ school and home technology use for learning.
We are reaching out to ask you to take part in a Technology & Learning questionnaire. Your participation is essential to help us form a more complete picture of technology use for learning in our students’ lives. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy and they will help your child's school choose the right technology for their classrooms. It will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
The last day to complete this questionnaire is October 5, 2018. Please complete the questionnaire by going to the following link:
