Planting the Seeds of Inquiry, Community and Growth: A School Garden Story

Follow multiple garden journeys and learn how students answer many questions about the world around them while they learn to problem solve, work together and overcome obstacles through building an amazing school garden. Watch how the students grow as individuals, independent thinkers, and into a classroom community that supports one another. Learn how it all started from a simple question and evolved into multiple garden projects where students thrived and community members joined to foster the curiosity of our young gardeners.

Ohio History Day Competition

This year Columbus City Schools were well represented at the Ohio History Day Competition at Ohio Wesleyan University. This year the theme was "Conflict and Compromise". Columbus Gifted Academy, Stewart Elementary and Ecole Kenwood students did an amazing job representing us and brought home several awards!

Thank you to all of the students and teachers at these schools! This event is a lot of work, but the learning benefits are many and amazing!ng, npot to mention the fun!

Gardens Are Sprouting Now!

This year our garden initiative helped 23 schools and Spruce Run put in community gardens. Now the time has come to harvest and enjoy the fruits of their labors! This has definitely been a learning curve for all of us. At our last garden PD, participants shared successes, struggles, expansion plans and, most importantly, changes for next year's garden. We are so appreciative to all of our teachers who took on this project for the experiential learning opportunity it provided for their children. It is this kind of dedication to children and learning that we see every day in our school houses at CCS! Thank you!

Budget Days Are Here! (School budgets that is).

Hard to believe it's time to think about next year already. After becoming aware of Marzano's research that points out that 55.4% of the vocabulary on reading assessments falls into one of the four strands of social studies, many teachers and principals are looking for resources that support informational reading in social studies. One resource that many of our schools have used, and given me positive feedback concerning, is Studies Weekly. The teachers and principals report that the students really enjoy the weekly newspapers which are aligned to Ohio SS standards. They shared that the online piece, that is included with the purchase of the weekly paper, provides motivation for learning and computer assessment practice.
