LIWP- Writing Across Borders
Covid-19 Community Shared Reading/Writing
Covid-19 and Community
There are many online resources and support being offered for educators and students. The Long Island Writing Project wants to contribute in a positive way for educators who are struggling with these new roles of teaching remotely, possibly educating children at home, and navigating a new reality. We thought, what is something that might offer our teachers community at this time of isolation? Our solution: Digital Shared Reading and Writing.
One of the most beloved traditions of our workshops and institutes is shared reading, when an educator chooses a passage to read aloud at the start of the day. It could be a poem, an excerpt from a book, a picture book, an article- any type of text. The participants listen as the read aloud takes place. After the last word is read, everyone picks up their pen or device and writes for 3-5 minutes or so on whatever came to mind from the reading. Then, a community share happens where participants share the whole piece, a part, or a line.
We will be attempting this through Flipgrid. A video will be created, where an educator is reading something aloud. After you listen, we invite you to take 5 minutes or so and write on whatever comes to mind. Then, press "comment" and leave a video response where you read your piece, a part or a line. Each video will be another person leading the shared reading and the comments will be the participants writing in response to that particular video.
Below you will find a link to sign up to do a shared reading video. We hope you sign up! We hope you participate. This is open to all educators so please feel free to share widely with your colleagues.
We wish you health and peace during this very challenging time.

The Long Island Writing Project
The LIWP comprises teachers from kindergarten through university. Our seminar leaders are outstanding educators from different grade levels and disciplines in local schools, and we have a strong, ongoing partnership with Hofstra University's Department of Literacy Studies. LIWP teacher-consultants keep up with research and changes in education and their work is grounded in practical classroom approaches. Through our model of teachers teaching teachers, participants in the LIWP strengthen the classroom strategies they already find effective in teaching writing and develop new ones.
One of the most important foundational beliefs of our Project is that teachers improve their knowledge of teaching writing by writing themselves. Another is that the best way to improve our own teaching is through sharing what works with other effective teachers. We welcome your inquiries, and look forward to writing, learning and teaching with you.
The Long Island Writing Project at SUNY Nassau Community College is an approved Sponsor of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) pursuant to Section 80-6 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, New York State Education Department (NYSED).
