Math Minutes Vol. 10

My Favorite Teaching Chanel Video...EVER!
"My Favorite No" Steps:
- Have students solve one question on an index card.
- Collect the cards.
- Sort the cards into "yes" and "no" piles.
- Search for your "Favorite No".
- Display the student work sample for everyone to see.
- Discuss the right thinking that went into the problem.
- Excavate the error and correct it.
As you watch the video, think about the following reflection questions:
- How does this warm up routine help foster a positive culture of error in the classroom and/or a growth mindset?
- How does this routine promote higher order thinking and discourse between students?
- How can you modify this routine for success with your students/grade level?
It's that time of year...
If you are a new teacher, new to a grade level or school, things can feel even more daunting.
Take a look at this chart that illustrates the phases of new teachers' attitudes toward teaching. If you are down in the depths of the disillusionment phase, know this -we have all been there!! If you are a veteran teacher, spend some time loving on our "new teachers" this month. And by "new teachers" I mean: new to the grade level, new to the content, new to the school, new baby on the way...and more!
Don't hesitate to reach out if you want some extra support.
- Need a 15 minute mental break, have me come in a do a Number Talk.
- Need 30 minutes to just breath, invite me to do a problem of the day.
(I only ask that you observe the lesson and maybe take notes on what you would like to try.)
