Math Recovery
A Year of Small Steps - Weeks 10-12
Distancing the setting and RE-presentation
Distancing the setting is described on page 9 of the purple book as making the instructional choice to having materials at hand and in view to flashing images or screening items in order to move the student towards being able to visualize the quantities on their own. That ability to have a mental image is called re-presentation. If students are facile with dice, dominos are a natural next step with two dice images being combined onto a single tile.
Chapter 5 focuses on structuring numbers 1 to 10 with many activities aimed at students working on their initial groups of 5. Here's a printable for dice and numeral cards from the purple book with a suggestion to use these dice and numeral cards instead of the 5 frame cards for Concentration, Snap, or Fish. It's always nice to use a game that students already know how to play, so they can focus on the mathematics and setting to help move them through instruction.
Does your classroom need dominos? Oakland County Math Recovery educators can email me to have some sent to your building.
We've added a cohort of AVMR 1 to be held at Clarenceville Middle School and open to all Oakland County educators. A registration link is being created for the following dates:
- January 23
- February 6
- March 12
- March 27
RE-presentation
Listen to this Zone of Potential Construction podcast for a nice explanation of the research by Les Steffe and others around the mental imagery concept presented by Math Recovery as re-presentation.
