MARCH 3: ARI Experience Dyslexia Training

Join us for a half-day, face-to-face "Experience Dyslexia" training with Allison Kelley, ARI Regional Literacy Specialist. Registration is open for either a morning (8:30-11:30 am) or an afternoon opportunity (12:30-3:30 pm). For teachers in the UA/UWA Region, half-day substitute reimbursement will be provided. K-3 Literacy Leaders: ARI Lunch and Learn for Region 4 (Hosted by Dr. Tiffany Davis)


The ARI Leadership Team will utilize the Journey to Success process to implement a plan of action for all K-3 schools. This process outlines five ‘circles of influence’ that must be cohesive and function effectively for schools to be successful. In each webinar, discussion will revolve around the circles and their current influences on student learning. Sessions will be 50 minutes in length, with a 15 minutes updates and a Q&A to follow.

A total of five webinars will be offered: October 28, December 9, January 14, March 4, and May 4. All sessions will be facilitated by Dr. Tiffany Davis and will begin at 11:00 am.

Paula Young, ARI Literacy Leadership specialist for Fayette, Lamar, and PIckens counties, will also host Brunch/Lunch and Learn sessions at alternate times for Region 4.

2021 Alabama NBCT Conference (VIRTUAL)--RESCHEDULED FOR MARCH 6

The annual Alabama NBCT Network Conference will take place virtually on March 6. All educators, administrators, preservice teachers, and education advocates are invited. You do not have to be an NBCT to attend.


The theme is now "Grab & Grow." It will include speed learning type sessions where presenters will present a very small presentation, such as a slide. Here is the tentative agenda:

Events are divided into K-6 (In-Person), K-6 (Virtual), 6-12 (In-Person), and 6-12(Virtual). Presentations will begin at 7:45 AM and lunch will be provided. Presentation schedules will be posted on the caravan website prior to the event date. A time sensitive link with presentations will be emailed to virtual attendees on the day of the corresponding in-person event.


CDC guidelines will be followed for in-person presentations. No-touch registration packets will be provided and will include a face-covering, hand sanitizer, and note taking material.

UA/UWA National Board Support Cohort Monthly Session: March 11

Beginning in February, candidates will meet monthly with their mentors for ongoing support. The focus for February will be a deeper dive into Component 4. Alabama National Board Certification Scholarships-DUE MARCH 31!

The open application period is the month of March. Only online applications will be accepted. The results will be shared with all applicants by May 19, 2021. These scholarships will apply to components that are submitted beginning in the Fall 2021. Applicants will have three years to use the scholarship and must register for at least one component during the first year. Youth Mental Health First Aid (REGISTER BY APRIL 5!)

Join Dr. Daniel Cohen, Co-Director of The University of Alabama's Center for Interconnected Behavioral and Mental Health Systems (CIBMHS), for Youth Mental Health First Aid training. Training will include asynchronous modules and participation in one synchronous session. The synchronous session will be held on April 28. The synchronous zoom training session will start at 9:30am and end at 4pm. The self-paced portion takes about 2.5 hours to finish and must be completed 3 days prior to the chosen training date.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders. The facilitator, Daniel Cohen, PhD, is an assistant professor of school psychology at UA and is an expert in the provision of mental health supports in school settings. The training includes a self-paced module and a synchronous day-long remote training session.

AMSTI UA: Math Course of Study Overview Sessions for 6-12 (Begins on April 14!)

AMSTI UA is offering four opportunities to participate in a two-part section of ALCOS Overview for 6-12 Math to secondary math teachers in our region. This professional learning is virtual and will focus on understanding the 2019 Course of Study: Mathematics and its conceptual framework, grade level changes, and focus standards.

Teachers must register for one specific section through PowerSchool. There is a maximum of 25 teachers for each six-hour professional learning section. Substitutes for teachers within the region will be reimbursed by the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center. In order to accommodate the possible sharing of substitutes between teachers at a school, sections are scheduled as two three-hour sessions on consecutive Wednesdays either in the morning (8:00 – 11:00 am) or in the afternoon (12:00 – 3:00 pm).

In order to receive credit and substitute reimbursement, participants must attend both sessions and participate in chats and breakout rooms where applicable.

AMSTI UA: Math Course of Study Overview Sessions for K-5 (Begins on April 27!)

AMSTI UA is offering six opportunities to participate in the ALCOS Overview for Grades K-5 Math for elementary math teachers, special education teachers, and elementary math coaches. All sessions will be virtual for a total of three hours. Participants will learn about the conceptual framework: Position Statements, Mathematical Teaching Practices, Student Mathematical Practices, and the K-5 Content Areas. April and May opportunities are scheduled for two afternoons (1.5 hours each) after school (3:00 – 4:30 pm) while the opportunities in June are each scheduled for one 3-hour session.

In order to receive PowerSchool credit, participants must attend both 1.5 hour sessions (or one 3-hour session in June) and participate in chats and breakout rooms where applicable.

Teachers must register for one specific section through PowerSchool. There is a maximum of 50 teachers for each three-hour professional learning session.

MEGA Conference: July 12-16, 2021

Mark your calendars for MEGA Conference 2021, July 12-16, in Mobile, Alabama!
