December 2019

From the Principal's Desk

Wow! Time sure flies when you're having fun. Can you believe we've already made it to December? Rodney Raider, the MES elf, has returned for some fun and scouting for Santa. Be sure to ask your child where Rodney was at every day. We are planning some fun dress up days for our last 12 days before Christmas break. As of today, Wednesday, December 4, there are only 21 sleeps until Christmas! Please pay extra close attention to teacher's newsletters for important upcoming dates.

Our Christmas vacation begins at 1:00 on Friday, December 20. We return in 2020 on Monday, January 6.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

If you need to contact me for anything, my office phone number is 989-635-4925, Google Voice number is 989-272-3718, and email address is jvislosky@marletteschools.org. Thank you all so much for trusting us with your children!

From the School Social Worker

As the winter season rolls around again this year, I continue to be amazed by the generosity of our community to reach out and provide our children with essential cold weather items such as coats, hats, mittens, boots, etc. Our goal is to ensure every child has access to those items. This year, with the support of Marlette Regional Hospital as well as one individual donor, we were able to provide five full meals to local families for Thanksgiving. Other families have reached out to offer donations or the willingness to adopt families for the holiday season as well. We also continue to coordinate with Toys For Tots and are collecting new and unwrapped items here at the school. All these acts of kindness and selflessness do not go unnoticed and we are truly blessed to have such strong community support. If you have some extra winter gear in your closet, donations will always be welcomed. If you are interested in donating /adopting a family or if your family could use some additional support this holiday season, please contact me at 989.635.7425 ext. 44924. If you are unable to donate, but would like to donate your time, please consider participating in the new Meals with Mentors program at the Elementary school. Please contact the school or view the flyer (below) for more information.

Coats for Red Raiders

The weather continues to get colder and some of our children need a warm, winter coat. If you have one sitting around that your child has outgrown or you want to donate something new, we will gladly accept it at the elementary school. If you have any larger coats available, the high school's Red Raider Mall will gladly find them a new home. Thank you!

The Giving Tree

Our Giving Tree is up in our lobby and we have started receiving gifts to help the Marlette Toys for Tots program. If you would like to donate a new, unwrapped toy, please drop it off in the box by the office during normal school hours. We appreciate your help with making sure every child has a special Christmas this year.

The other Giving Tree

Our friends at Marlette Dollar General have also setup a tree with tags to purchase gifts for children in our area. We would like to thank them for their partnership during this time of year.

Mornings at MES

This is a reminder that our doors do not open until 8:00. We have very limited supervision until the doors open and ask that you do not drop children off early, especially now that the weather is getting colder. If you have to drop off early and need latchkey services, contact Red Raider Care.

End of the Day

The end of the day is typically the busiest time in the office every day. All changes to our students' end of the day routines must be completed before 2:00. We know that emergencies do arise, but we expect all calls for any changes to be made before 2:00. If you really want to help Mrs. Redman, make sure your child knows where they are going after school first thing in the morning and send them with a note if it is not their typical routine. Thank you!

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast is served every morning, free of charge, in every classroom. Lunch is available for only $2.45. Milk is available for $.40.

School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families, too! Parents are encouraged to complete the free/reduced meal form application each year as the qualifications change. Furthermore, forms may be resubmitted at any time during the school year if there is a change in financial status with the household. For more information, please contact the Superintendent’s Office at 989-635-7429.

School Calendar and Hours

The Annual School Calendars along with District information may be accessed online at www.marletteschools.org. Students are expected to be in class by 8:15 when the second bell rings and stay until the dismissal bell at 3:00. A pattern of late arrivals and/or early checkouts is considered truancy.

Parent Advisory Committee Meeting

If you would like your voice heard and want to help us improve, please plan to meet with us in the Hub on Tuesday, December 10, at 3:30 PM. Some items on the agenda will include:

  • 3rd grade mandatory retention law and what we've done at MES to meet the requirements
