Weekly Update for 2-9-2020
Joan MacQueen Middle School
Principal Message
Good afternoon Alpine!
This is Casey Currigan, Joan MacQueen's Proud Principal.
I've been asking the question, where did January go? We have flown through the first month of the new decade. We are into the second round of hands on science experiments brought to you by our Wheel of Experts STEAM program. A huge thanks go out to Ashleigh and Jessica for their support of our Dust Devils and for making these experiments come to life for our students..
Our 8th-grade students are beginning their last semester of middle school. This past week, many of them visited with representatives from their future High School. No matter where they choose to attend, their experience in 8th grade will play a huge roll in their success.
In the research report, The Forgotten Middle, researchers identified that, "students' academic readiness for college and a career can be improved when students develop behaviors in the upper elementary grades and in middle school that are known to contribute to successful academic performance." We will continue to support and encourage our 8th graders to develop habits of mind that will better prepare them for high school. We are pleased to announce that in April we will provide our eighth graders with the unique opportunity to take the PSAT.
As we move to support our 8th Graders moving on to high school, we would also like to welcome the class of 2027. Alpine's 5th-grade class will be my first to move from recruitment through promotion, and I am excited to meet every student and parent. With that goal in mind, we are delighted to welcome parents and students to a showcase of Joan MacQueen on the morning of February 28th. Additionally, we are hosting an evening event for parents on March 4th in the Joan MacQueen Gym. There is a flyer with the particulars about both events as an attachment to this email.

Phones on Campus
We are all aware that middle school in 2020 is not the same as when we grew up. Today, cell phones, while powerful tools for learning are also often used to spread negative messages instantly. In order to do our part in reducing the impact of social media on students, phones will need to be shut off and placed in backpacks during the school day.
Students with visible Air-pods, phones or other electronics out during school will have those items confiscated and they will need to pick them up in the office after school. If the confiscation of their electronics becomes habitual those items will be held in the office for parents to collect. As always, thank you for your support.
