Reflecting on Veterans Day: A Tribute to Heroes and a Look Ahead to Thanksgiving Break in GMSD
As we approach the Thanksgiving break, with just five school days remaining, I want to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable Veterans Day celebrations we experienced last week. The enthusiasm and respect displayed by our students, staff, and families in honoring our nation's heroes were truly heartwarming.
It was an honor to join in the celebrations, meeting veterans both virtually and in person, whose stories of dedication and sacrifice left a lasting impression on us all. The musical tributes by our GMSD Orchestra, Houston Middle Band, the Farmingtones, the FHES Choir, and Music Programs at Riverdale resonated deeply, echoing our nation's core values. And let's not forget the outstanding Riverdale students' Parade of the States, a creative and time honored showcase of the fifty nifty United States.
This week we also shine the spotlight on one of our GMSD Ambassador Students, Jacob Geiser. Jacob, who has achieved a perfect ACT score, plans to continue his journey of service by applying to military academies. His perspective on Veterans Day and commitment to serving our country is inspiring, and I hope you'll make time to watch it.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all veterans who participated in our celebrations and to everyone in the GMSD community for coming together to honor our heroes. Your involvement made the day unforgettable.
Jason Manuel,
Superintendent

Empowering Futures: Superintendent Celebrates HHS Academy's Success in Job Skills Training
GMSD middle schoolers today, tech innovators tomorrow
In a recent development, Germantown Municipal School District's middle schools have incorporated the Woz Ed STEM curriculum, marking a significant stride in preparing students for advanced technology studies. This innovative curriculum is designed to align with high school programs in Information Technology, Mechatronics, STEM, and Computer Science, creating a seamless educational pathway for our students.
The heart of this initiative lies in the STEM kits, which are not just educational tools but catalysts for sparking a passion for STEM careers among students. By providing these kits, the district aims to build a robust pipeline leading students towards our high-tech high school programs. This initiative also plays a crucial role in ensuring equitable access to STEM education, bridging the gap between both feeder schools and offering every student the opportunity to explore and excel in the field of technology.
8th grade Riverdale students show off their design skills with 3D printing
Mr. Schmitt’s Multimedia and Design students were challenged with the task of designing a 3D print project that in some way incorporated a pencil. Several students of course thought of modern spins on the classic pencil cup, but a handful of students got more creative.
The students used Tinkercad to think through and bring to life their designs, but with 3D printing, there were challenges to navigate. The students created their original concepts, and then presented them to a panel to receive feedback. One of the panelists, Chris Cooper, is a master of 3D printing, so he was able to guide the students on what aspects of their designs would cause trouble when printing and how to fix it. Students then went back and revised their designs, and a top three were selected.
The twist pencil holder was thought up by Muslima Dadanova. Muslima had previously seen this design, and she wanted to make it her own. On the base of the design, she added a flower. The design consists of small cylinders to hold the pencils at an angle, creating a twist. Muslima said, “We had to print multiple times, but seeing it now, I’m just really happy I’m in the top three.”
The next design was created by Hayba Osman, and it is ready for the holiday season. Her snowman design, named Gerald, was inspired by a project her sister was working on that incorporated snow. This led her to the snowman, and with help from her friend and fellow finalist Muslima, she decided to put the pencil in the middle of the snowman to represent his arms. She took feedback from the judges and also designed his top hat to be open to store paper clips as well. Hayba’s design printed on the first try, and she was surprised and happy that she had created a design that was so successful.
The last, but certainly not least design, was a huge fan favorite named Kroger. Kroger was designed by Maegan Mcrae, and her fellow classmates, and the panelists alike, loved the design. Kroger is a small figure with a party hat, bowtie, and big shoes, and he holds the pencil in his mouth. One of her classmates thought up the name Kroger. This design was one of the most creative, and Maegan worked to ensure that when printed, the weight balance would be correct so that her design could stand.
Exploring Law Enforcement Careers: HHS Students Visit Germantown Police Department
Students of Houston High School had the opportunity to explore careers in law enforcement last week. Under the new LG Future Leaders program, a special partnership between Leadership Germantown and GMSD, several students had the unique opportunity to engage with professionals at the Germantown Police Department. This visit was not just an excursion, but an immersive experience into the world of police work.
The day was filled with learning and exploration, as students interacted with GPD officers and detectives. They delved into various aspects of law enforcement, including mock-investigations, the use of drones, virtual reality weapons training, and crisis management. Such hands-on exposure offered them a realistic glimpse into the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges faced in the field of law enforcement.
Special recognition goes to Captain Ben Sharp and Lieutenant Richard Severs for their invaluable contribution to this amazing field trip. Their efforts, along with those of other GPD members, provided a rich learning experience, truly impacting our 'Future Leaders'.
The LG Future Leaders program connects students with Leadership Germantown alumni, district, and city officials, opening doors to diverse career pathways.

One teacher's passion for The King translates to meaningful field trip for HMS students
Students in Houston Middle School's Current Events and Sign Language electives embarked on their annual field trip to Graceland last week. Led by seventh-grade teachers Joseph Murray and Storm Schoonover, this excursion wasn't just a tour of the iconic home of Elvis Presley; it was a deep dive into the significant impact the King of Rock and Roll had on Memphis history and civil rights.
Elvis Presley's influence went far beyond his revolutionary music and charismatic stage presence; he was a significant figure in the cultural shifts of the 20th century. In Memphis, Elvis' impact is palpable. His choice to record at Sun Records, a studio known for its integrated sessions, and his admiration for African American musicians, like B.B. King, played a crucial role in the city's musical evolution.
Moreover, Elvis' rise to fame from humble beginnings in Tupelo, Mississippi, to becoming a global icon demonstrates the American dream, resonating with the ethos of Memphis, a city known for its grit and grind. His philanthropic efforts, particularly in Memphis, demonstrated his commitment to giving back to the community that fostered his growth.
This annual field trip by Houston Middle School not only celebrates Elvis Presley's legacy but also provides students with a unique perspective on how one individual can influence and shape the socio-cultural fabric of a city and beyond. Through this hands-on learning experience, students gain a deeper understanding of Memphis' history, the civil rights movement, and the power of music as a tool for social change.
Workout with Woody: Dogwood Elementary's Health Drive Pairs with PTO Fundraiser
As Thanksgiving draws near, it's a timely reminder of the importance of staying active and healthy. At Dogwood Elementary School, Principal Jessica Woody is leading by example, spearheading innovative initiatives to promote staff wellness. This commitment to health extends beyond the school walls, as the Dogwood community gears up for an exciting event: "Workout with Woody."
Scheduled for November 19th at Noon, this special workout session will be hosted at OrangeTheory Fitness in Germantown. Participants can purchase a spot to join Ms. Woody in her favorite workout routine, with the added benefit of supporting the Dogwood PTO. In a kind gesture of community spirit, 100% of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Dogwood PTO, reinforcing the school's dedication to both health and education.
Back at Dogwood Elementary, the staff is engaged in a range of health-focused activities. The school has introduced a "March Madness" walking competition, creating a fun and competitive way to encourage physical activity. Additionally, a staff wellness room equipped with treadmills and weights offers a convenient option for exercise during breaks. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, a "Gratitude Challenge" for November has been set up, fostering a positive and thankful mindset among staff members.
TONIGHT, the City will recognize its Teacher of the Month and Student Excellence Award Winners
Congratulations to both Adam "Hughes" Putnam and to Forest Hill’s Kelsey Holland who have been selected as November’s Youth Excellence Award Winner and Germantown’s Teacher of the Month. They will be celebrated by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen on November 13th.
Houston High Students Harmonize Music and Service with Benefit Concert
What happens when top students from the band, orchestra, and choir get together for a special HHS Honors Academy Capstone Project? In a display of talent and altruism, three musically gifted students have found a way to combine their passion for music with a commitment to service. Drew Coffey, Ethan Assad, and Ava Tignor, known for their participation in school music programs along with several local rock bands, organized a benefit concert at the school, striking a chord of generosity and community support.
The concert, aimed at supporting the University of Memphis Summer Music Camp, holds special significance for these young musicians. Each of them has personally experienced the impact and enrichment offered by the camp, making their initiative not just an act of giving back but also a tribute to a program that has shaped their musical journeys.
Did you miss the benefit concert? Their band, Dream of Gardens, has agreed to perform on this year's GMSD holiday parade float, promising a treat for parade-goers.
The successful benefit concert and the students' ongoing involvement in community events reflect the vibrant culture of service learning at Houston High School. It showcases how students can effectively blend their academic pursuits with meaningful community service, creating impactful and memorable experiences for themselves and those around them.
Going Blue: Some special trees in GMSD to become a classroom canvas
If you're strolling around our campuses next week and spy some trees rocking a striking shade of blue, there's no need for a double-take. Here's the scoop:
Our schools are teaming up with the Germantown Public Art Commission for the Blue Trees project, a visual public art installation crafted by Australian artist Konstantin Dimopoulos. Using a biologically safe blue liquid chalk (not paint), the project shines a spotlight on global deforestation, reminding students of trees' indispensable role in our world.
Some of our talented students get to join forces with Dimopoulos and bring this vision to life right on our school grounds! So, if you notice some 'student-blue' trees dotting our landscape, now you know the creative minds behind it.
Concerned about the trees? Worry not. The blue hue comes from a water-based pigment that’s kind to our trees, critters, and environment. Over time, nature will do its thing, and the color will fade, leaving behind memories of an artful statement.
