Location
Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System lies about half a mile off the winward side of the island. It is the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and the second longest in the world.
Wildlife
The Belize Barrier Reef is home to a large diversity of plants and animals, and is one of the most diverse ecosystems of the world:
- 70 hard coral species
- 36 soft coral species
- 500 species of fish
- hundreds of invertebrate species
Some of the fish species that can be seen on the Belize Barrier Reef are the blue tang, black jack, yellow goat, atlantic spadefish, the banded butterfly fish and a variety of sharks and other marine wildlife.
Most of the vegetation one might see on a trip to the Belize Barrier Reef are mangrove forests, consisting of three main types of mangrove tree: buttonwood, red and white mangroves, with the occasional black mangrove.
