Letter from the Principal
Dear Families,
The school year has kicked off and we are excited to see all of our students back in the building. Students are continuing to learn building wide expectations and practice expected behaviors. Students learned about their classroom incentive program and how to use the regulation station within their classroom. A new practice that has started at Northview is called Restorative Practices. This practice is a way to build community and trust, as well as repairing harm if an unexpected behavior occurs. Your child may come home and talk about community circles which is a part of Restorative Practices. In addition to learning building expectations, students have started the iReady diagnostic assessment. Your child's results will be shared at Parent Teacher Conferences in November. Teachers will begin to form small groups during our WIN (What I Need) time, and intervene or extend student learning. The groups are flexible and change often according to the most current data. As teacher teams, we meet weekly and discuss student needs and how to best support our students academically, emotionally, and socially. I am looking forward to a great 2023-2024 school year.

Updates from Art
We have some exciting stuff planned for art this year. Please be sure to sign up for Artsonia to be able to view and share your child's artwork. You will need to do this for each child. Go to artsonia.com/parents, and enter the parent code of PZ6KR8YM. You will enter your child's information and your email to get connected.
Please be sure your child has an art shirt as soon as possible. While we try very hard to keep things clean, art happens.
Below you will find information to help you talk to your child about their artwork in a more meaningful way.
Counseling Corner with Mrs. Pfeifer
Northview’s monthly character trait for the month of September is Friendship with a school mantra of “I am friendly. I am considerate.” The start of the school year brings mixed emotions when it comes to friendship. Some students feel so excited to be reunited with their friends, whereas other students might feel nervous. All feelings are okay and expected! We have been spending a great deal of time talking about what it means to be a good friend, how to make a friend, and learning about our new friends. For the remainder of the month, we will continue to learn how to be a kind and considerate friend in all areas of our building!
Updates from Music
Northview Elementary General Music classes provide a multitude of experiential learning styles (visual, kinesthetic, motor, aural/oral), teaching the “whole” child. In NV General Music class, grades 4k-4th experience, create, explore and learn to read/define a musical score. Music lessons are often cross-curricular, supporting other academic subjects. The music department has created a comprehensive and sequential curriculum, meeting the state and national standards. Please reference https://dpi.wi.gov/fine-arts/music/education-standards for the Wisconsin music education requirements and https://www.savethemusic.org/resources/national-standards-for-music-education/ for the national standards. General Music students meet two times throughout a 6-day rotation; 4k students receive 30-minutes, while grades K-4 receive 45-minutes of learning. Grade 3 uses the Soprano Recorder as a tool for playing/reading music, and grade 4 learns to pick melodies on the Treble-clef staff using ¾-size acoustic guitars. The following music methodologies are used: Kodaly (rhythmic reading Ta Titi), Solfege (Do Re Mi), Dalcroze Eurythmics (motor), Orff (xylophone-percussion), World Drumming, Singing.
Junior Kindergarten
Junior kindergarten has welcomed all of our 4 year olds into a new phase of life- school! Our 4 year olds are learning how to be a student and what is expected at Northview. Much of junior kindergarten is play based learning with literacy weaved in and out of most activities. It has been an awesome start to the 2023-2024 school year!
Kindergarten
The kindergarteners are off to a great start! They’ve been working hard learning and practicing school routines. Throughout the first week of school, they built excitement through the book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? They took a tour of Northview and collected clues and animals that “escaped” in order to retell the story in their own words.
Throughout the remainder of September, the kindergarteners will be preparing for fall assessments, including both i-Ready testing and in-person assessments with their teachers. They will also be starting Unit 1: Understand Numbers 1-10 in math, Unit 1: Launching the Writing Workshop in writers workshop, Unit 1: We Are Readers in readers workshop, and Unit 1: Making Friends with Letters in phonics.
The kindergarten team enjoyed meeting all of their families and new learners at sneak peek. They are looking forward to a busy and productive start to the 2023-2024 school year!
1st Grade
We are excited to welcome our new group of first graders! To start our year, we are learning LOTS about classroom rules, expectations, and kindness. First graders have been busy learning about their classrooms, teachers, and peers. From getting to know you games like “Find Someone Who…” to silly toothpaste activities to help learn about using kind words to creating classroom puzzles, we are having fun while building community. We will be starting our first units soon to learn about addition facts through 10, how to build good reading habits, write small moment stories, and much more! We can't wait to keep growing our first grade brains!
2nd Grade
A new school year means new beginnings and new adventures! The 2nd graders are off to a great start! We have been getting to know each other, building classroom communities, and practicing Northview’s 3B’s…Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. We are excited to move further along in our first units of the year. Our reading workshop has us learning the habits of big kid readers; in writing workshop we are composing small moments that matter from our lives; and in math we are mastering addition and subtraction strategies. Lots of amazing growth to happen this year!
3rd Grade
In 3rd grade we are busy learning to find good-fit books, create our reading spot, and build our reading stamina. Third graders should read 20 minutes each night to grow their reading skills. We are learning how to build a reading life!
4th Grade
Welcome back! We are excited for a year of learning and fun with our new 4th grade students! We hope everyone had a relaxing summer, and kept those brains busy. In reading we will begin focusing on character interpretation, in writing we will be creating realistic fiction pieces, and in math we will explore place value to the thousands. Here's to a great 2023-2024 school year!
