Superintendent's Message
Dear JUHSD Community,
This past week, I had the privilege of visiting with Jefferson and Oceana students, families, and staff at their Back to School Nights after having attended TN, Westmoor and Thornton over the past few weeks. I was thoroughly impressed! I thank you for showing up to support your child's education and I thank you for entrusting your children to us. We take this responsibility seriously and I am proud of the work that we are doing. I have an equity lens on when in our schools, and access, opportunity, inclusion, and belonging are evident in JUHSD!
Along with attending our final Back to School Nights of the season, I had the honor of standing behind the ceremonial ribbon for Jefferson High's Grizz Arts Club mural dedication this past Tuesday afternoon at Mitsubishi Motors, 6399 Mission Street, Daly City. Find more information, including photos from this event, in today's Update. The next time you are in Daly City, swing by and take a look at this gorgeous art created by our JHS students.
As our District's Educational Housing at 705 Serramonte continues to receive positive press from nationwide media outlets, I am excited to share that we were featured on Good Morning America this past Saturday, September 10. WHS math teacher Nicole Ann Polo, JHS math teacher Corazon Gatbonton and I were interviewed by ABC's lovely Morgan Norwood. It was a short-but-sweet segment, but it highlighted our amazing staff housing! Hearing "Jefferson Union High School District in Daly City, California" from a Good Morning America anchor live from New York City is pretty awesome. Woot!
Finally, did you know that our Educational Housing is just phase one of our District's plan to create the Serramonte Del Rey Neighborhood here at 699 Serramonte Boulevard? The creation of this neighborhood will raise funds for our district to boost student programs, generate money to attract and retain great teachers and staff, create an accessible community garden and public parks, AND provide housing for a community that desperately needs it! We are in the final approval phase and would greatly appreciate you filling out this online petition to show your support!
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the fall weather that seems to be creeping into our Bay Area!
Warmly,
Toni Presta
Superintendent

Attendance Awareness Month

Everybody plays a role in ensuring children attend school regularly. Communication, collaboration, and coordination among student, parents, and school teams are essential! Learn more on Attendance Works' website.
Hispanic & LatinX Heritage Month
From September 15 to October 15, 2022, we recognize and celebrate Hispanic Heritage and Latinx Heritage Month. We recognize the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
This month we honor the many Hispanic and Latinx Americans who have been integral to the prosperity of the U.S. Their contributions are immeasurable and they have left an indelible mark on the U.S. culture and economy.
Wonder why this Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month is spread across September and October? It is based upon the history of the observation which began in 1968 and was expanded in 1988. It is started on September 15 because it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, and Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

JHS Grizz Arts Club Mural Project Dedication in Downtown Daly City
Way to go, JHS Grizz Arts!
This past Tuesday, the Jefferson High School’s GrizzArt Club celebrated the completion of their first mural with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony this past Tuesday, September 13 at 6399 Mission Street, Daly City. Members from the City Council of Daly City, along with JUHSD leaders and staff, were present to celebrate with the students and the Daly City community.
Finished this summer, the "Greetings from Daly City" mural is the result of a collaboration between community member Victoria Magbilang, project funder Dragonfly Community Arts, and the Bay Area Mural Program (BAMP), who worked with the GrizzArt students and their advisor Suzanne Koehnlein.
The team is grateful to everyone who helped make this idea a reality, including Daly City Mitsubishi and building owners Donna Curusis and Patricia Herriott, and appreciates the enthusiastic support from Daly City Government. The next time you are in Daly City, drive by and look at this stunning art created by our JHS students!
