Principal Notes
Dear Cimarron Family,
It is hard to believe that we are entering into autumn with fall break just around the corner. As a community, we already have so much to celebrate from our 8th grade girls volleyball team winning the District Championship to our yearbook team being honored at CSU’s Journalism Day earning the highest rating and winning 1st place in Best of Show in Yearbook and Video! These are just a few of our many accomplishments in what has been a very busy start to the school year!
While we have a lot to celebrate, we still have areas where we, as a community, can grow and learn. One of our greatest challenges today at both school and home is supporting our students on learning how to become safe and responsible digital citizens.
Being a digital citizen is multifaceted, and our kids need direct instruction, discussion, and role modeling in order to learn how to safely navigate social media and their personal devices.
While we know that technology will always be a part of our future, research also tells us that taking time away from technology can produce a variety of benefits from decreasing depression and anxiety to promoting better sleep habits. With this in mind, we will be engaging in a Cimarron Digital Detox from October 25-27th.
Cimarron would like to support families in their dialogue with kids on this topic and our Digital Detox, so we will be hosting, “Setting Safe Boundaries for Kids Online,” on October 22nd at 6:30pm. If you are unable to attend this session, please consider the following resources below.
As always, please know that our staff is here to partner with you. Let us know if you need support, resources or ideas.
Here are some tips from Common Sense Media about how you can support your child:
Discuss safe and responsible online behavior. Talk about who it’s okay to chat with and what it’s okay to talk about. Children shouldn’t answer questions online that make them feel uncomfortable. They also shouldn’t talk about adult topics with strangers.
Make sure your child feels safe telling a trusted adult. If something creepy or inappropriate happens online, kids need to know they won’t get in trouble if they tell an adult they trust.
Monitor your child’s social media and cell phone usage. There are many apps and settings already available to support you and your child in this endeavor. Turning on your phone’s screen time tracking is a great place to start.
Block, ignore, or leave. Most kids know to brush off unwanted contact. Encourage this behavior.
If you have access to the Internet at home or at work, you can visit the Common Sense Media website at www.commonsense.org and take a look at the parent resources on kids and media.

Safety Update
Standard Response Protocol Information
School Safety
A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by school and district administration and staff
SRP Is Action Based
The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based not on individual scenarios but on the response to any given situation. Like the Incident Command System (ICS), SRP demands a specific vocabulary but also allows for great flexibility. The premise is simple - there are four specific actions that can be performed during an incident. When communicating these, the action is labeled with a "Term of Art" and is then followed by a "Directive." Execution of the action is performed by active participants, including students, staff, teachers and first responders.
Cimarron Safety Letter
We are ready for a great start for the 2019-20 school year! As you know, safety is our number one priority at Cimarron Middle School and in the Douglas County School District. Please read the linked letter.
