A LETTER FROM YOUR MMS LEADERSHIP TEAM
Howdy McAnally,
May 19th....MAY 19th!!! I just can't believe it. We are at our last Friday of the year and what a year it has been. We are so thankful for our time together and are excited to finish the year with a ton of fun next week.

- Chromebook return is May 23!!!
- The last day of school is Thursday, May 25th, and is a half day.
It has been an amazing school year and we are so excited to see our students "movin on up!"
Also a big shout out to our MMS staff for being amazing, dedicated, tireless educators who have gone above and beyond to make McAnally such an exceptional school. We appreciate you teachers!

Counselor Corner
Don't forget to give your kids S.P.A.C.E. this summer!
S - SLEEP
Kids who maintain a more stable sleep schedule are less moody, have fewer emotional outbursts, and continue to grow properly at this important time in their development.
P - PEOPLE
Although many kids say they are "connected" through social media, texting, or other virtual friendships, they are nothing compared to the real thing. Kids at this age really do need the actual face-to-face time and multiple opportunities to practice social skills, be with other kids their age, and learn how to work in groups. All of this requires time with actual people. This is especially true in the intermediate and middle school years. They need that social connection as part of proper development.
A - ACTIVITY
Providing time or opportunities for your child to be active is a great way for them to relieve stress. Many kids spend a lot more time gaming, on a device, or watching television during the summer while you are at work. Making sure that they are swimming, walking the dog, going to soccer practice, or learning a new dance from YouTube can ensure that both their body and mind are getting what they need.
C - CONSISTENCY
One of the best things about summer is not being driven by a hectic schedule, but keeping regular, repeated tasks more stable and consistent is always helpful for kids. Even though it seems intermediate and middle school kids are old enough to meet their basic needs like hygiene, eating, and sleeping - left to their own decisions this can sometimes lead to poor nutrition, lack of proper sleep, and looking like kind of a mess! Our kids still need adult help to create the proper structure and self-care system. Continue to model these things and stress the importance of a routine for these basic needs.
It is also comforting to kids to know what to expect. If you try to enforce an early bedtime only on a rare occasion in the summer when they are in the middle of season 2 of their favorite Netflix series, you may be headed for an argument. Predictability helps keep things running a little smoother and may save you some parenting sanity.
E - EVENTS
Even if you aren't taking a summer vacation, make little plans throughout the week to give your kids something to look forward to. Things as simple as a family movie night, going to a water park, walking the dog together, or making cupcakes, can be something that kids will look forward to doing. As much as they may not act like it, most kids we talk to in the counseling office actually really love the little things parents take time to do with them. They like it when you carve out an evening to do something different, especially one that they've taken part in planning
