St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 1 | 28 APRIL 2022
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back everyone to the start of Term 2.
I am positive that all had a restful break and enjoyed the holidays, however, I am sure that there would be a number of families who are looking forward to a rest while their child /ren are attending school, particularly if families have been in isolation!
A big thank you must go to all the staff for working so hard in having the classrooms ready for our students yesterday.
Please keep in your thoughts and prayers the students who will be making their Confirmation and First Holy Communion this term. I know that the teachers will have them well prepared for the celebration of these Sacraments and it will be an exciting time for the students.
Our school community would like to welcome two new staff who have commenced work at St Columba’s this term. They are Ms Shona Simpson who is our new School Counsellor and Ms Justine Palandri for taking over operating the canteen. The canteen will continue to run on the same days as in the past.
A reminder to families in Year 3 & 5, during Week beginning May 9, NAPLAN testing will take place.
There will be catch up days during the week beginning May 16. Please see your child’s teacher or Mr Yock if you have any questions.
There will be communication sent home tomorrow afternoon regarding the new Covid protocols for Catholic Schools in WA. There is a meeting tomorrow morning at 8:30am for Catholic Schools, where Principals will be updated on how the new Dept Of Health protocols will affect schools from next Monday.
CEWA has recommended in the interim that students wear masks to school tomorrow, (however, this will be a Parent/Carer choice) and that the new mask protocols for schools will come into effect from next Monday.
God Bless and keep safe.
Allen McMahon
Principal

CEWA Childsafe Framework
This framework of nine elements combine supporting a child safe culture, healthy and respectful relationships and extended guardianship in school communities, based on the latest research and recognised best practices. Teachers are responsible for delivering this curriculum to students.
Please click on the button below to view the video below for an introduction to the framework.
ANZAC Day
We will gather tomorrow as a whole school to celebrate ANZAC Day. We remember all those who have served our nation during war, those who have died, and those who have returned.
Let us pray for all who fought for our country believing in the gift of peace.
Students will participate in an online liturgy over the PA system at 9am this Friday 29 April, led by our Year 6 leaders.
Confirmation 2022
Our Year 6 students are busy preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this term.
Parents of those candidates receiving Confirmation in 2022 will meet for the Parent Information Evening next Monday 2 May at 6pm in the Church.
One parent from each family is asked to attend the session, which should take about 45 minutes.
NAPLAN 2022
All children in Years 3 & 5 will complete the NAPLAN Online testing in Weeks 3 and 4 this term unless exempt or withdrawn.
The testing period is from Tuesday 10 May to Friday 20 May.
The school has undergone extensive School Readiness Testing procedures to ensure our devices and networks can support the online assessment.
Please find below the NAPLAN testing schedule for St Columba's Primary School for 2022.
Please note all tests are online except for the Year 3 Writing Test.
Students who are absent on a particular testing day are still able to complete the test when they return to school. The NAPLAN testing window is open until Friday 20th May, giving us a full week to complete any catch up testing needed.
NAPLAN assesses fundamental skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum, rather than specific content. It is not a pass-or-fail type test, for which students can study or drill, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children. It also provides information that allows schools and governments to better target efforts to help all students achieve their potential and acquire the basic skills to help them build successful lives.
The best way you can help your child to prepare for NAPLAN is to ensure that they are well rested and send them to school after having a nutritious breakfast. Please reassure your children that NAPLAN is just one part of the school program and urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.
A public demonstration site is available for parents and students to access. The link below provides access to the NAPLAN Online Demonstration site which provides examples of the different types of question formats as well as practice questions across all 4 testing areas. Public Demonstration Site Link
An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.nap.edu.au
We invite you to speak with your child’s classroom teacher if you have any concerns regarding the NAPLAN assessment.
