Gr 2 ELA and MATH news
Here's our weekly update from Pilgrim School
This week in Gr 2 ELA (reading with Mr. Yearick)
This week we did another round of small group read-alouds. Some students finished their chapter books about Pancho the dog, while others read non-fiction books about flowers, games, or origami. On Friday we brought in an artifact that was related in some way to these stories. We described the flowers with some great adjectives like "realistic", "fresh" and "fragrant", as well as "creative" to describe Elias's homemade flower. We learned about Chinese checkers, and Ben even invented his own game! We saw some interesting folded objects, like an airplane and a crane, and heard some fun poems about dogs. As a class, we read Henry and Mudge and made some inferences about some of the things not said explicitly in the text.
FRIDAY is GAME DAY in 2nd grade math
Coin Top It
This is a group card game. Each player flips over a card from their deck. Whoever has the highest value of coins on the card "tops all" the others and wins all the cards. (like a 4 player game of war). But never fear, when play is ended a coin is flipped. Heads means the player with the most cards wins BUT tails means the player with the fewest cards wins!
Our newest math app on the iPad: MATHMATEER
In this game, the missions are math practice in time, money, addition and subtraction and more. With each correct answer you earn $ to buy additional boosters and other tools for a rocket that you design and launch.
Domino Top It
We have been using the domino dots this week to build our addition and subtraction fact power. Did you know each domino has 3 "magic" numbers? This one is 5, 3, 8. (each part/ top and bottom and the sum or total. That will help us create 2 addition and 2 subtraction facts. Then we play a top it game adding the 2 sides together.
