Week 5, T2 2022
3/6/22 - He Pānui Wiki Rima, Whānga Tuarua
Tālofa lava (Hello)
Happy long weekend koutou (everyone) - for those of you with whānau (family) members who are under the weather it will be a welcome break. There seems to be a wide range of winter ills and chills going around at the moment and we appreciate you all keeping in touch with the school to let us know how our tamarki (children) are.
It is also Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa - Samoan Language Week. The week celebrates the third most spoken language in New Zealand. In 2022, it runs from Sunday 29 May to Saturday 4 June. We encourage you to try some Sāmoan Language at home this weekend.
The Carterton Cluster Cross Country event held here at Gladstone School on Wednesday was an excellent day out. Thanks to those of you who were able to come down and support our tamariki. The weather was touch and go at one point however it managed to fine up and be warm for the races. We extend our thanks to Graham Brown for organising a very well run event, to Grantly Booth for allowing us to use his paddock for parking, Anthony Fraser for manning the parking, Tanya Klue for recording, Damian Karena for track maintenance and our dedicated group of parents who ran the sausage sizzle and provided baking. We were impressed to see tamariki putting in their best efforts and have a large contingent going through to the Wairarapa Cross Country on Tuesday the 14th of June.
Well done to the following students who are part of the team going to the Wairarapa Cross Country Event (Years 4-8 students who were placed in the top 10): Rosie Falloon; Lauren James; Lyra Alexander; Genevieve Taylor; Keira Wither; Charlie Ashby; Declan Groen-Paku; Lachie Macdougall; Henry McKay; Blake McGregor; Jay Kawana-Reid; Arthur Wildy; Hannah Douglas; Ayla Longstaff; Ella Strang; Evie Dick; Alice Thompson; Zoe Cates; Michael Quirke; Hugo Wilkinson; Ben Freeman; Cooper Davies; Aiden Edwards; Harvey James; Olivia Orsborn; Sophie Beetham; Juno Fuller; Neela Rogers; Joel Douglas; Monty Murnane; Joey Williams; Tim Berryman; Lily Tomlin; Hannah Beetham; Lucy Orsborn; Rosie Walters; Saoirse Doyle; Annie Heffernan & Michaela Delves.
Here are some lovely pieces of writing from our friends at MPS.
We had the lovely David McKay & John Partridge for taking time out of their busy day to turn our chicken coop around. We really appreciate it. Our job now is to get the chickens laying in their fancy abode & not out in the never never.
We were delighted to receive a $1,000 grant from the team at Enviroschools & Earthwise. The grant is being used to set up a school beehive & purchase the necessary equipment. We aim to educate our students about bees and eventually supply honey to our community. This is what the facilitators had to say:
After careful consideration, in collaboration with our partners at Earthwise, we are excited to let you know that your project has been chosen as one of 16 projects to support in 2022.
The team at Earthwise said they feel very humbled that they can help make some of these amazing projects come to life. “A standout idea to not only teach children about the importance of bees but also how they contribute to nature. Great to see the idea not just involving the school but also have a positive impact on the community.”
Next week is 'Support Staff Week' and we will be celebrating all the mahi that our fabulous support staff put in each and every day. The image above is spot on "Schools Couldn't Run Without You" - if you see Kirstan Norman; Chrissy Webb; Julie Nunn; Lara Hooper; Rachel Nicol or Clinton Homes, give them a big shout out!
Values Focus This Week
We appreciate the manaakitanga being displayed towards staff as we plug gaps in staffing. Amy Strang has been amazing in the office while Kirstan has been away as have our TA's and teachers who have covered when and where needed this week - it feels much like a game of twister at the moment.
Nga manaakitanga,
Belinda

Message from the DHB
As you will be aware, the health system is facing a challenging time ahead. As a community, we have a predicated 2nd wave of Omicron across the country during July to September and a variant of the Influenza virus that is already in the Wairarapa. Therefore, with the potential for other health issues across the community due to winter on top of these higher profile viruses, the DHB would like to support where ever it can. Please reach out to us for additional information on staying well this winter.
Poto College House
I would like to introduce myself as the new Manager at Poto College House, the boarding hostel for Wairarapa College.
We are the only co-educational boarding facility in the Wairarapa and we are taking enrolments for 2023 now. We offer affordable boarding to our Wairarapa community and beyond and we support sporting, cultural and academic excellence.
The College and Poto House are holding an open night on Wednesday 8 June from 6pm – 8.30 pm and we would love to see your year 8’s and their parents here and we ask that, if possible you advertise this in your school newsletters.
If your students are unable to attend on the 8th but are keen to know more about Poto College House please don’t hesitate to contact me. I would be very willing to come and visit your school to chat with your young people, or organise a private tour of the hostel facilities with them and their parents.
