We are winding down to the end of the school year, break-up is happening and we are now just waiting for green-up! There are only 19 school days left for students and we are preparing everything for closing out the school year, which as everything else, looks a little different this year. Here are a few important things to note that have additional information below:

VACCINE APPOINTMENTS FOR STUDENTS AGED 16+:
The Fairbanks Community COVID Vaccine Clinics on April 27, May 4, and May 11 at the Carlson Center will be administering the Pfizer vaccine – the one suited for individuals aged 16 and older.
As of now, there are many appointments available. This is an ideal time to get any adults or student(s) vaccinated! (Students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to receive the vaccine.)
To make an appointment visit COVIDvax.Alaska.gov or call 907-646-3322. The best browsers for the COVIDvax.Alaska.gov website are Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

The Board of Education will receive a report on Tuesday, May 4th regarding the two-tiered bus system approved in the Recommended Budget. This presentation will include the two school start time scenarios included in the School Start Time Survey.

CAP & GOWN PICK-UP
Your cap and gown orders have arrived!
The Herff-Jones rep will have caps & gowns available for pick-up in the WV commons during all three lunch periods (11:25am -1:20pm) on Tuesday 4/27.

The WVHS National Honor Society is teaming up with Ms. Gillam to recognize the different paths our graduating seniors are taking after high school.

CLASS OF 2021 GRADUATION UPDATE:
Greetings Wolfpack Class of 2021 Students and Parents,
West Valley graduation is now being held at the Lathrop football field on Friday, May 14th at 6pm. Please be sure to note the change in venue and time. Masking and social distancing will be required at all times during the event.
I just received confirmation regarding our spectator capacity. Each graduate will be given 5 tickets to give to friends and family. Tickets will be for bleacher seats or seats on the field. Bleacher or field seats will be determined via a random lottery. Every person over 2 years of age will be required to have a ticket in order to attend. Family groups will be seated together with at least 6 feet distancing from other groups.
The ceremony will take place rain or shine and will also be live streamed.
I will continue to provide updates as I have them, but please feel free to reach out at any time.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2021
The school district will be holding summer school this year. Student who need to make up a class (credit recovery) or who would like to get a head (enrichment) will have that opportunity.

There is an application necessary for both programs.
Summer school will be free of charge again this year.
Please contact your counselor if you need help determining if this is an opportunity you should take advantage of.
LET'S BUILD BRIDGES
Bright Futures Fairbanks, Fairbanks Council of PTAs, and Fairbanks Native Association- with support from the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, have launched an effort to provide internet funding to low-income families currently without internet access.

2021 “If I Were Mayor…” Essay Contest
Alaska Municipal League and the Alaska Conference of Mayors are proud to announce the 2021 “If I Were Mayor…” Essay contest for high school students around the state. The contest is an effort to engage young Alaskans in the issues of their municipal government. It is designed to give them an opportunity to use writing, language and civics knowledge to creatively voice their opinions.
Rules
- Essays must address the subject with the opening line, “If I were Mayor,”
- Students must be enrolled full-time at a high school (grades 9-12) in Alaska or be registered as a home-schooled student in (grades 9-12) in Alaska for the 2020-21 academic year
- Only one essay may be submitted per student
- Essays must be between 500-750 words
- All essays should be typed. Handwritten essays must be legible for review.
- Essays will be judged on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought, proper use of grammar and subject relevancy
- AML/ACoM retains the right to publish essays along with the names of each student
Awards
- One winner will be selected from each of AML’s director districts. Each of those winners will receive $100 cash prize.
- One of the district winners will be determined the grand prize winner. The grand prize winner will receive $1000
How to Enter
Complete the entry form and submit it with essay. Essays can be submitted by mail, online below, email or fax. All essays must be received no later than 4:00 PM on Friday, April 30. Winners will be announced Monday, May 10.
