Bay Area Children's Theatre has partnered with the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program to create Rock the Block: A Walk and Roll Musical for elementary school students. The show features singing, dancing, comedy, and lessons about safely walking and bicycling to and from school.

Summer BAL Offerings
BAL Summer PD Opportunities
Here is a sample of the professional learning offerings the district will providing this summer. Exact times, locations and logistics are still being worked out, but here's u a sneak peek to help you in your summer planning.
I STRONGLY recommend if you haven't didn't attend BAL last summer, that you plan to spend some time this summer in training.
Chelsea
BAL 201: Next Steps in Balanced Literacy: June 16, 17,18, 23, 24, 25 (9 AM - NOON)
These six half-day trainings will give you the tools you need to refine and deepen your Reading. A la carte, or as a series, the modules will cover topics such as Conferring, ELs in the Reading Workshop, or Backwards Planning a Writing Unit.
Reading Workshop Training of Trainers: July 27- 30
Trainers from Teacher's College will be in Oakland to give a one week PD. Focusing on Reading Workshop, this training will be delivered to teams of 5 from each school. These teams will be expected to deliver a condensed version back at their sites during the Fall of 2015-16.
BAL 101 Training: August 11 and 12
This training is for new teachers, or teachers who have not been trained in the basics of Balanced Literacy. Participants will get an overview of the theory and components of OUSD's Balanced Approach to Literacy, and have the tools to get Reading and Writing Workshop started in their classroom.
F & P Benchmark Assessment Training: August 13 and 14
This training will introduce new teachers to the components of the Benchmark Assessment System and train them on administering, coding, and scoring the Reading Record
Word Study in the Balanced Literacy Classroom: Week of August 17th (Exact Dates and Times TBD)
This workshop will review the best practices for the teaching of phonics, spelling and vocabulary in order to prepare teachers to plan and implement a daily word study lesson in their classroom. In addition, participants will learn to differentiate their word study within their workshop time and guided reading.
Keep your eye out for the official Summer Catalog, which should be out in the next few weeks. It will contain the complete list of Summer PD offerings and include directions for registration.
