AVID Spotlight
Trexler was recognized at the Onslow Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 6th. During the Good News Spotlight, the district discussed Trexler's path to re-validation as a National Demonstration School. Nine years ago, Trexler Middle School was validated as one of 120 AVID National Demonstration schools by AVID Center because it exemplified a school-wide approach to AVID. Last fall, an AVID Center Team visited Trexler Middle School to determine whether it would retain its distinction for another three years. As part of the re-validation process, the team spent a day meeting with the school’s leadership team, visiting classrooms and interacting with students. Once again, the AVID Center was honored to re-validate Trexler Middle School as an AVID National Demonstration School through the Fall of 2020. As one of a select group of sites so honored throughout the U.S., Trexler is in an elite category among the approximately 5,600 AVID schools in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and 16 countries and U.S. territories. The group praised the school’s leadership under the direction of Principal Lynn Jackson and AVID Co-Coordinators, Melisa Browning and Lacee Estes, for their high standards.

This month our 8th grade students are being led by Mrs. Taylor through a program called Lifelines®: A Comprehensive Suicide Awareness and Responsiveness Program for Teens. According to the American Association of Suicidology, suicide ranked as the second leading cause of death for young people (ages 15-19 and 15-24). While suicides account for 1.6% of deaths in the U.S. annually (approx. 45,000), they comprised 17.6% of all deaths among 15-24-year-olds. If your student or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please seek help! Individuals can contact the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or visit https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ to speak or chat with someone immediately. For resources in this area, individuals may consider contacting Trillium Health Resources at 1-877-685-2415 or by clicking here.
