SES Family and Community Newsletter: December 2022
JCPS Goal: By the end of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of Johnston County Public Schools will earn a school letter grade of A, B, or C.
Our vision:
SES students are life-long learners encouraged by home, school, and the community. They will meet the challenges and high expectations of an ever-changing world. They will work to their fullest potential to make a positive difference in the school, community, and the world.
Welcome to Our Family and Community Newsletter
DEAR SES FAMILIES,
Happy December!
We hope you were able to enjoy a fun and restful Thanksgiving break with family and friends.
We thank our families for attending our first Academic Parent Teacher Teams event: Families are Learning Leaders. Working together, we will continue to build excellence for our students.
As the holiday approaches, please continue to focus on good attendance. Attending school regularly supports better student outcomes. For more attendance information, please visit our Attendance Matters website.
This month we are celebrating SES Holiday Cheer Week. Take a look below to learn about the theme for each day.
Parents, we need your support to become a Capturing Kids Heart National Showcase School. Please complete the Family CKH Survey. This is a required component of the selection process. We also invite you to read the December Our Capturing Kids Hearts Newsletter. The focus word and character trait this month is "Responsibility." Our December theme is "Do your Part". Please help us by supporting CKH at home.
Parents and guardians, consider joining our Parent Advisory Council. We are looking for two members who are committed to the improvement of our school. Please visit our PAC website or contact Ms. Rosado to learn more about how you can apply.
As the end of the year approaches, we are looking forward to a strong end to 2022 and an outstanding start to 2023. We wish you a very happy and safe holiday season.
Respectfully,
Ms. Rosado

CKH Social Contract Focus Word
We will continue to highlight our social contract focus word of the month and challenge our SES family to participate in challenges related to the word each week. The focus words are concepts commonly found on social contracts and will help to keep us all focused on upholding the things we’ve agreed to do and value. Each month the word is different, and every week, students can participate in challenges that allow them to practice the social contract focus word of the month. Every student, family, and staff member can do the challenges!
The social contract focus word this month is RESPONSIBILITY. This month, we’re challenging our students to reflect on their experiences and take responsibility for how they choose to learn and grow from these experiences. We are partnering with you to grow and develop your child’s sense of responsibility. As you reflect as a family, celebrate your accomplishments, identify areas you may want to improve and consider new ways to serve others in the days ahead.
To help support responsibility at home, please take a look at the challenges for this month, the newsletter, and discuss or participate with your child at home.
Focus word of the month challenges can be found here.

School Calendar Updates
As mandated by general statute, all Pre-K through 5th grade JCPS teachers are entering the second year of LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training. Therefore, the following Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability recommendations were approved:
- December 15, 2022 was changed to an Early Dismissal Day
- December 16, 2022 was changed from a Early Dismissal Day to a Required County Workday (LETRS Virtual Session)
- January 30, 2023 was changed from a Required School Workday to a Required County Workday (LETRS Virtual Session)
- January 31, 2023 was added as an Optional Teacher Workday (End of semester)
- June 12, 2023 was designated as a Required County Workday (LETRS Virtual Session)
