School Calendar for 2022-2023 School Year

Scholastic Book Fair September 26-30th

Get Ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.

Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from September 26-30, during your child’s library specials time at Hickory Library/Media Center:

This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account.

Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases.

If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

The countdown to more Book joy is on! Catch you at the Fair!

Happy Reading!!

Book Fair Volunteers Needed

Mrs. Dunn is looking for parent volunteers to help with various tasks (setting up, tearing down, personal shopper). For every shift, a parent volunteer will receive a $5 book fair credit.

Please remember that parent volunteers must have a current background check on file with Avon Schools. To confirm that your background check has been approved and is current, please reach out to the Hickory office.

A UNIQUE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL HICKORY STUDENTS -DREAMBOX MATH

Dear Families,

Don't forget that there is a unique learning opportunity that students can take advantage of from home. In addition to classroom instruction and learning at school, we are providing an online supplement to deepen understanding and practice in math.

Our goal is for students to spend 60 minutes each week engaged in DreamBox math activities. Some of these minutes will take place during the school day, but not the full 60 minutes. Please encourage your students to participate in DreamBox at home.

Look for your student's login information inside their take home folder on the green paper.

PLEASE DO NOT HELP! I know this seems to be the opposite of everything we ask you to do; however, DreamBox will adapt based on the accuracy of your child's response. Please only support by asking more questions and not providing answers.

DON'T FORGET to celebrate your child's learning!

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher.

To Our Multilingual Families-SHARE WITH US!

Dear Families-

We would LOVE to learn more about your family's heritage. A special display is being created in the school where students can learn more about the different customs, beliefs, and countries of our students and their families. If you are interested in helping us with this project, please complete the FAST FACTS SHEET (attached below) for your family and send it to school with your child next week. Please also send in a family picture with the fact sheet. If it's easier, you can email a picture to Mrs. Wright at srwright@avon-schools.org or to your child's teacher.

We are very excited to learn more about your family's heritage.

Here are the questions that are asked on the fact sheet:

Student Name

Student Grade

Name of Origin Country

A drawing or picture of your country's flag

Language Spoken

Four (4) Famous Landmarks

Three (3) Popular Food or Drinks

Six (6) Beliefs or Holidays

If you have any questions about this special project, please let us know!

From the Hickory Cafe' Manager, Mary Cantlebarry - A la Carte Sales

The Hickory Café started selling A la Carte items to our 1st through 4th grade students last Tuesday, September 6th. Kindergarteners can buy water, juice, and or milk.

If you don’t want your child to purchase extras, you can change it in Titan or email me at: MECantlebarry@Avon-schools.org.

Please be aware that we are not selling everything item each day. For example: Chips will be one day and Ice cream another for now. Extra Fruit, Vegetables, Entrée, and drinks will be available daily, unless we unable to get products.

Thanks for your help and understanding in this matter.

Your Child's Attendance is Important to Us!

As we start the school year, we want to remind all of our parents/guardians of the importance of having your child come to school. When a child misses 10 or more days of school-for any reason (including prearranged, ill, medical appointments, bereavement etc)- we see a negative academic impact. Your child is an important part of Hickory Elementary and we are excited to help them succeed.

To this end, we want to review the attendance policies and expectations.

1. After the fifth (5) day missed, a courtesy letter will be sent out to parent/guardians informing parents that absences are beginning to accumulate.
2. After the eighth (8) absence, a second attendance letter will be sent home stating that an excessive number of absences have occurred.
3. After the tenth (10) absence the school will work with the family to create an attendance contract.
4. Upon the fifteenth (15) absence, excused or unexcused a referral will be made to Project Attend.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's attendance, please contact the Hickory office at 317-544-6300 or email the attendance secretary, Rene' Wright at srwright@avon-schools.org.
