A pair of wrestlers will hit the mat at Ford Field in the state finals
Walled Lake Central’s Brycen Anderson and Walled Lake Western’s Liam Vaughan will hit the mat at Ford Field on March 3rd and 4th with their sights set on an individual wrestling state championship.
Anderson (175 lbs.) and Vaughan (285 lbs.) both finished fourth on Saturday, February 18, at the MHSAA Regional Championships to qualify for the state meet.
Anderson pinned (2:00) Flushing’s Logan May in the opening round of the Division 1 Regional at Hartland before losing to 3-time defending state champion Josh Barr from Davison, who went on to win the regional. After his loss to Barr, Anderson bounced back with a 7-2 decision over Lake Orion’s Chris Hargett. He’d then get pinned (4:31) by Clarkston’s Brock Trevino in the 3rd place match.
Vaughan opened the Division 2 Regional at Warren Woods Tower in a big way pinning (:26) New Boston-Huron’s Joshua Buetner. Vaughan, though, would fall in a heartbreaker in the following round to Lamphere’s Trent Jackson by a 5-4 decision. Vaughan bounced back to advance to the 3rd place match pinning (5:00) Jefferson’s Gabe Hall, but Seth Fulton from Center Line defeated Vaughan by fall (2:37) as the Warriors’ sophomore took 4th.
