Internationally Speaking, with Principal Bryant
Dear Silver Spring International Families,
Per the Board of Education (BOE) meeting on Thursday of this week, MCPS is adopting a new color-coded system to communicate school operation status on inclement weather days. The new system includes information about virtual instruction days, which is now part of the formal response to emergency weather conditions. See more information here.
OUR PART
It is important for SSIMS students to practice bringing their Chromebooks and chargers to and from school in a protected case with them every day. This way, they are prepared for daily instruction AND also prepared if there is a need to pivot to virtual learning the following day due to inclement weather. Caregivers- please support us in communicating this message to your child.
Inclement Weather (repeat)
The Winter season typically brings a variety of inclement weather that may impact the normal operations of schools.
With the winter weather upon us, please remember to constantly check for school delays and closures. When the district announces there is a two hour delay, this means school busses and offices will begin 2 hours later than their regular time.
The best way to receive timely notifications is to subscribe to AlertMCPS at this link:
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/alertmcps.aspx
School delays and closures are also announced on all major English and Spanish radio and TV news stations in the area, as well as the main MCPS website, and our SSIMS Parent listserv email and connect ed emails.
Enjoy your weekend! 🐾

8th Grade Promotion Celebration!
While we cannot believe we are already thinking about the end of the school year, we wanted to share the 8th grade Promotion date to add to your calendars. Wednesday, June 14th will be our 8th grade promotion celebration. The celebration will take place during the school day. More details and information about the structure will come in the next few months.
Model UN Students
This week (October 10-12, 2023) in Model United Nations class students presented speeches and wrote resolutions about Ecosystem Restoration. The highlight of the conferences was hearing delegates ask each other thoughtful questions and hearing their responses. Students in Model United Nations have shown that they are highly capable of navigating complex global issues and identifying innovative solutions. Way to go!

English/Spanish Language Exchange
The former Club Español has returned in person every Thursday (5:30-6:30) at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library, 900 Wayne Avenue in downtown Silver Spring with a new name and purpose. The new English/Spanish Language Exchange will welcome English and native Spanish speakers. The weekly sessions will run like spontaneous meet ups, where participants learn from one another. Those gathered will divide into mixed pairs or trios, with at least one native English and one Spanish speaker in each conversation group. The native speakers will help the second language learner with grammar and vocabulary in discussion of the day’s topic. Native Spanish speaking students can receive student service learning hours (SSL) for participation For more information contact Anina Ertel at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library, (240) 773-9420.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities Fair
