Welcome Back Parents and Students!
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!!! Noah Villarreal and Justin Ridgeway Odem Owls win All-State Band Honors
Saturday at the Area Band Auditions Odem High School had two students earned spots in the All-State Band! Noah Villarreal advanced to his 4th Consecutive State Appearance as a percussionist, and Justin Ridgway advanced to his 2nd State Appearance as a percussionist as well. Noah's accomplishment is a very rare one! Last year there were just 4 Four-Year All-Staters for classifications 1A-4A out of the entire state! This accomplishment has earned him a $2,000 scholarship that will be presented to him at the All-State Performances on Saturday, In adition, Noah was awarded a $2,500 scholorship from TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association).
February 11th. Both of these gentlemen will compete at the final round of State on Wednesday, February 8th and then participate in the rehearsals leasing up to that performance of the 3A All-State Band.
Eight other students competed at the Area Round of Auditions; Abby Tovar (9th), Lilibeth Barra (9th of 35), Sabrina Childress (4th of 15), Joey Aguirre (9th of 15), Brandon Morin (5th of 20), Roberto Ramirez (4th of 20), Natalie Stanley (6th of 20), and Ethan Tracy (8th of 20). This marks the most students Odem has ever advanced to the Area round of auditions, and we had several of these students very close to making the All-State bands as well. All of them worked incredibly hard and we congratulate them on their hard work!
2017 San Patricio Livestock Show Queen Competition
The Official Kick Off was this past weekend with the Queen’s Contest. Odem HS had two students competing. Madi Rackley was competing for the Odem FFA and Megan Frerich was competing for FCCLA. We are very proud of both girls. Megan was 2nd runner-up and she did an outstanding job. Madi was graced to win Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic, and take home the honor of being the 2017 San Patricio and Aransas County Stock Show Queen. Clean Sweep! FFA sponsor JT McClellen stated, "I am beyond proud of her accomplishments and the poise in which she won. This gets Odem off to a great start. I hope the rest of the stock show goes as well."
The County Stock Show will take place Jan. 25th – 28th . Please come out and if available to see our students compete.
Lindsay Silguero--Odem High School's Third Six Weeks Rock Star Teacher
Odem High School’s Rock Star Teacher for the third six weeks is Lindsay Silguero. Lindsay teaches English 2 and English 4 and is in her first year of teaching at Odem High School. Lindsay is such an asset to our campus and English Department. She collaborates with fellow English teachers to create highly engaging lessons that address all groups of students in her classroom. While doing a walkthrough in her classroom I was totally captivated as she walked her students through the Kernel Essay process. The lesson was very strategic with timed activities for each step and entered into the students’ journals. Students were eager to complete each segment and share their work with the class. There were virtually no discipline problems or students off task. Even the most reluctant participants were engaged. She contributes to the campus goals of improving STAAR scores through presenting writing strategies at the faculty meetings and creating curriculum for Power Hour.
In addition to being new at the high school campus, Lindsay is also a junior class sponsor this year which means PROM duties and fundraising. Just go by the concession stand at the basketball games; she will be there with a smile. We at OHS are looking forward to seeing great things come from Lindsay Silguero.
